You went via Abington rather than the route suggested above?
Any reason why?

Cheers James

Mainly because Carlisle to Abington has only one big hill (Beattock Summit) along the route. It’s probably the easiest route available. There’s a 12 yo girl en route at the moment she came that way yesterday and has made the Forth today. Also a campsite at Abington fell in around the right distance. Look at record attempts they use Abington or the A701 Beef Tub. viewtopic.php?t=120240&start=540

Just been Looking at trains from wick to Leeds £163!!!

Has anyone tried the coach?

Stagecoach - Inverness city link - Edinburgh?

Can you get bike on the coach?

Then train Edinburgh to Leeds £36

Logistics is worse than riding!!!

I looked at Hertz rental cars from Wick to Leeds airport, it comes out at about 130 pounds. Pretty pricey.

I haven't but that's a good idea I will do so nearer the date. I like to use villages as waypoints and snack points!!

I got a Wick to Glasgow for £30. Trick is to book on the day cheap fars go on sale around 11 weeks out. Some websites let you set up e-mail alerts. Biggest issue is booking fast enough to get a bike space.

Wick to Glasgow advance tickets can be had for around £30 or so, depending on date, (Inverness to Glasgow can be had for less than £20) & Glasgow to Leeds seem to be from around £20. The tricky bit is really getting as far as Aberdeen as there aren't very many trains, beyond that there are a lot more.

From this side of the Pennines I've picked up advance tickets to Glasgow (from Wigan or Preston) for around £10 each way, even only a couple of days ahead of travel.

John O'Groats Bike Transport might be an option (if a somewhat pricier leg of the trip) to get to Inverness if you can get on a shared trip (for £60) right from Jo'G.

I'll go to the train station tomorrow and report back.
Otherwise the bike courier chaps it may well be.

I’m not sure that going to train stations gives you best value. Also some tickets can not appear because they are sitting in someone’s basket then released later.

Another thought to overcome/beat the whole getting to and from issue, is to do the think in halves.

The Lake District seems to be about halfway and this is an area with lots of transportation options. So, starting of from say Kendall/Penrith location (due west of Middlesborough (Ugh!)) ride north to JoG, then return to starting point.

Another time, do the opposite. Start from Kendall/Penrith and ride to Penzance and back.

Living fairly close to half way, until the Wimps opportunity came along, I’d decided on this strategy. In my head though I wasn’t starting from home just riding to the start :D

I would love to have the the time to do that! :D :D
But present circumstances prohibit doing so with 4 kids.
However I want to do it whilst my dad is still alive.

Perhaps I can get one of my kids interested when they are older!
