Cicerone Route A466 Closure

Post by LukeCrawley »

The A466 north from Chepstow is closed. There is a diversion in place which goes to Monmouth. The closure is for major road works which may last for 6 weeks. No info on an end date. Unlike most rd closures there are three fences all 6 feet high which literally go from side to side of the road so not passable by bike. Take the diversion at the roundabout before the racecourse.

Which way does the diversion go?
Will it take me way out of my way?

The diversion goes west from Chepstow and then north through Devauden and then Trelleck. The closure was six weeks from May so it may reopen by mid-June but you would need to check.

Alternatively, you could carry on past the race course and up the hill at St Arvans, then drop down to Tintern (past the closure).

St Arvans hill is steeper than the diversion route, but hopefully you'd lose a fair bit of the heavier traffic to the official diversion.
It's probably best to take the 2nd right, after the initial top.

No great loss, its a horrible road. Too busy. Go out of St Arvans and drop to Tintern . At least the road from Tintern north is a bit quieter. You could cross the Wye instead at Chepstow and go up to Tutshill and then St Briavels
