NCN27 Lydford to Okehampton - Suitable for a Tallbike?

Post by gaz »

Asking for a friend. https://cycle.travel/map/journey/97288

Surface quality, low branches (headroom), kissing gates, barriers?

If not what's the alternative?

All comments gratefully received.

Whats a tall bike?
The route is part of the granite way https://www.visitdartmoor.co.uk/things- ... te-p250623

I have ridden this on a tandem many years ago. Dont recall any issues with low headroom. We did have to negotiate a short section which was a permissive route and had gates at either end. Dont know the current status but the route has been extended and improved.

Knowing that it is part of the Granite Way is very helpful. A few youtube videos of rides and walks, not the complete length but certainly useful.

Not sure about the bit south of Lydford.
I actually don't know even though I know the area well indeed.

Given the choice, I'd come out of the southern end of Granite Way and go down the hill through Lydford village and go south through Brentor (past the closed Brentor Inn) and drop down to Tavistock. Done that route endlessly and can highly recommend it.
Forget the cycle routes as promulgated.

Here's a piccy of my recommendation.
Do it, it's the best way, honestly, I know! :D

I believe the plan is LEJoG. I don't know the whole route, no idea how they'll be arriving at Lydford nor where they head after Okehampton.

I should have linked the short section of NCN27 they're enquiring about rather than the whole thing  .

Careful with that bike. One slipup and you could go over the edge of the Meldon viaduct.

If they actually want to go via Tavistock and head north ................ and I wouldn't suggest anyone does ............... is to leave Tavy town centre "between the banks" (Natwest and Lloyds) up the hill towards Brentor.

Keep going up the hill and carry on to Lydford, and after the village uphill past the school, turn left onto the Granite Way.
Keep on it until you get to Sourton and come off onto the A386 and head north under the A30 then keep going past the service areas and find the small crossroads and turn right down the hill and bend to the left and join the Old A30 to go into Okehampton. Forget carrying on along the Granite Way. Pointless and difficult. Gates, a tunnel, more gates, more gates, and mud if it's wet.

Best way is to not bother with Tavistock at all. Too hilly by far.
Come up the A39 via Camelford and turn east onto the A395 and turn off left via Egloskerry after Hallworthy to Launceston, then Old A30 to Sourton .................... then as I said above into Okehampton.

Honestly, I know.
All on my patch. :D
