cycle-endtoend.org.uk - WEBSITE ** NOT ** CLOSING

Post by robgul »

After nearly 10 years I have decided to pension off the Cycle End-to-End website at the end of September 2019 when my webspace service comes up for renewal.

It's been fun creating it and helping lots of cyclists with information, guidance etc to plan and ride what is arguably the UK's greatest challenge ride.

So, a thank you to everyone that supplied journals, listed their rides and supported the website - if you're contemplating the ride then download anything you want before the closure.

Imported as a " sticky" by this site ?

Sad, but I understand you Rob.

Would it be possible to export at least some of it to some other site?
Landsurfer suggests this site. Could this be possible? Maybe contact Admin?

I have been inundated (well, 5 offers) overnight and expect to discuss, initially, with the one that I think is probably most appropriate.

Well.

Enormous thanks are due to Rob from so many of us for hosting this site over the years, the absolute go-to for anyone interested in doing an end to end or simply finding out about what such an undertaking involves. Probably everybody and anybody who visits this part of the forum will have visited Rob's site and I, like many, will miss it enormously. There are several months in the year where I frequently visit his site to look at what is happening in the world of end to ending and the collection of journals is an unparalleled record of some wonderful journeys (including, slight cough, one of my own  ).

I sincerely hope that someone else can take this on: if support is needed from other forum members (including financial), I'm happy to assist.

Meanwhile, thankyou for all you've done - you have provided an unmissable website.

Thank you for the very kind words.

My reasons for closing it are (or perhaps were?) that the hit stats, rides listed and Journals submitted have dropped away in the past 18 months/2 years and I wondered if perhaps it had had its day? The intended Forum didn't take off - perhaps as 2 of the major cycling fora have sub-boards for LEJOG/JOGLE?

It's also linked to the fact that I am ceasing the "reseller account" that I have with a major ISP with a number of the sites that were for the MacRide Events that I organised until 2016 [11 years, 35 cycle events, £800,000 raised for Macmillan] are no longer needed and the other handful of sites, including a couple of cycling clubs where I'm a member, will be better served from standalone sites. Finance is a minor issue but costs have risen and revenue from the sites I hosted has dwindled.

There are, as at this moment, three potential opportunities for it continue and I'll look at these and decide what to do in the next 5 or 6 days.

I'm delighted to announce that the www.cycle-endtoend.org.uk website is NOT now closing.

One of the cycling fora has stepped in with a generous offer of hosting and technical support to enable the site to continue . . . . it's already moved to the new host

Over the next few months I plan to update and revitalise the site - some technical changes and some content.

Do please contribute your ride dates, journals etc - and a BIG THANK YOU to everyone that both posted messages and also sent messages direct to me - I'm flattered that the site appears to be so well-received and enjoyed by so many people.

Site is down for a short while (showing an ISP default page) while the domain registration is being moved.
