I really like the OS moving map app. But for following a defined route on a bike I find the turn-by-turn function on my Edge 1000 way ahead. ; - )

As usual I suggest trying both.

Years ago I met Mr Spreadsheet doing his LEJOG carrying a full hard backed AA road atlas. He’d never once considered how heavy it was. :)

You need a handlebar-mounted MickF

Considered the Bolt? Cheaper but with all the functionality needed. That's what I use these days for all rides including multi-day ones. I've been using one for years with no problem. 15-hour battery life!

It should be considered as an option... try it out and list the advantages and disadvantages... just like any other decision.

Don’t ask them for the route but like any mapping app the blue dot is where you are.

I use a Mega XL the battery life is great the screen is easy to read and TbT is good. Make your route from your phone Lezyne app, Lezyne web site, Komoot, or import from your favourite source.

2ND, excellent :)

I’m new to this GPS stuff being an old school maps man.
Review comments criticise the Lezyne for poor turn by turn navigation. That seems a fundamental reason for getting one - at least on the unfamiliar roads I’ll be on. Or have I got this wrong?

I really like turn-by-turn navigation, and the associated distance to junction.

But I haven't used that Lezyne.

Only if you can pre cache the map areas you will be crossing, otherwise you will be running with live data and burn through your battery very quickly indeed.

For a smartphone you want an app that does offline mapping, and which also supports only lighting up the screen when you come to a junction (or just a rather verbose, set of voice instructions with the screen off).

If you can recharge batteries everynight then the world is your oyster.

Hi,
Paulatic probably uses turn by turn more than me?
I usually turn it off as I just keep my head down and watch the arrows.
The alert beep is loud on turn by turn but it will run battery down quicker which is why I dont use it.
The mega xl gps has customisable contrast and night light brightness which is great for night work.,
Every thing on it is customisable.

I went for the loaded pack which is £243 from tweeks ebay, base unit is £163.

I think it depends on what you put into it. The old saying rubbish in rubbish out
I’m on day 4 of a tour and still haven’t needed to charge the Lezyne Mega xl
Every day’s route was created in cycle.travel and every TbyT has been perfect.
I also had to use the Lezyne routing from the app to change a little bit at the end of day. Only about 7 mls but perfect.
Also just importing a gpx as I do from MapOut and following a bread crumb is fine too. Just remember to load offline mapping for the area you’re in.
