Cycling UK's LEJOG 'Main Route'

Postby willpercival » 4 Sep 2020, 11:06am

I'm cycling LEJOG in mid-September and have organised my trip to follow Cycling UK's 'main route', accessible here: https://www.cyclinguk.org/route/gpx-file-lands-end-john-o-groats-main-route-lejog-or-end-end. Although it says it's intended for road bikes, on closer inspection it seems to follow a number of canals (e.g. Worcester & Birmingham Canal) and disused railway lines (e.g. South Staffordshire Railway Walk). Some of these appear to have gravel/compacted dirt surfaces and so I'm concerned that it won't be suitable for my road bike with 25mm tyres.

Could anyone who is familiar with this route or has ridden it in the past please advise whether it is appropriate for road bikes or if I need to reroute some sections of it?

Thanks!
Will

Ummm... I'm a bit dubious about that page.

It claims "This route does not seek out a quieter, more scenic route but is aimed primarily at those wanting to do the route relatively quickly. It uses a lot of main roads and should be less hilly." But the route shown on the map is a winding quiet-road route using plenty of NCN. Has someone uploaded the wrong map to the page, maybe?

Take a look at the Cicerone Route (book by Nick Mitchell)

This is pretty much the route used by Peak Tours LeJog, is suitable for Road Bikes while avoiding busy main roads wherever possible.

Do you have any fixed points?

Dartmoor?
Cheddar ?
Seven bridge?
Forest of Dean?
Manchester / Liverpool
Forest of bowland
Lakes
Edinburgh
a9 or not?

Once you have a rough idea what you want to see you can fill in the details.
