And I’m off!

Postby Brianjeff50 » 4 Sep 2020, 5:35pm

First day done LE to Wadebridge 56 miles (plus an extra ten miles for Penzance down to LE.)
Not the most enjoyable of days to be honest. Very, very hilly - I expected that and I can cope (just) but horrendous traffic on every main-ish road or town. And some bizarre route prompts from NCR3. The worst diverted off the road into Cambourne, down a hideous lane and then pointed me to a gravel path. No thanks! Why? The next miles were all down a main road anyway. I’m learning fast when to ignore it.
But enough carping: the weather was good, tonight’s B&B is great and we are on our way!

Good luck!

When I did the Cornish way a few years ago I luckily noticed the Camborne diversion before riding it, and just carried on cycling direct into town. One of the more bizarre little loops on the Sustrans routes I’ve ridden.

I always avoid Camborne and Deadruth (Redruth). as you enter Camborne turn left just after the Choughs pub out towards Tehidy Woods then Illogan and then to the west side of Blackwater.

LE/Penance/Hayle/Connor Downs/Camborne/Redruth/Blackwater.
A30 for a bit, then off through Zelah and back on again for a bit, then off to St Newlyn East.
St Columb/Wadebridge/Camelford/Davidstow A39.
A395 for Hallworthy and turn off left for Egloskerry/St Stephens, down the hill to the Spar Shop and off up a short rise to turn right and then out onto the Old A30 for Okehampton.

Easiest route out.

At Tiverton tonight - that’s pretty much the way I went. Robs Gap was a lifesaver: I was knackered and a few quiet flat miles were welcome after all the climbs. Set me right for an easy roll into T. Portishead tomorrow- nice and flat.

Yea !!! to rob's passage. Where did you stay in Tiverton? And I took the gravel path into Cambourne, it goes past the rugby club. So I could have just gone straight on??????

The Camborne path past the rugby club needs removing as a bike friendly route. It is unsuitable for anything other than a off-road-ready bike with mudguards and even that would be unpleasant if the path is wet.
Current status report:
Back on two wheels in deepest Pastyland and loving every minute. Mission: to enjoy big, bad hills again.

Good old Rob's Passage eh?
Rob S was a member on here that first described it after my complaining about the Cadbury Hills. Plymouth chap.
Not seen Rob on here for some years.

Having ridden through Camborne in excess of 1000 times the easiest route is don't bother going through Camborne or Redruth stay but on the A30. However it's just existing on a bike but only marginally more than going through Camborne/Redruth.

Story ................

Escorted some LEJOGers through Cornwall into Devon a year or so back. Done it a few times over the years.
They'd done their homework and on the odd occasion had different ideas to me.

No probs, but I convinced them to do it my way.
Why?
Because my way went through towns and villages .............. shops ................. for water, food, and stuff.

Stay on the main roads if you want, but when you want a shop/pub/cafe/water/toilets/bike shop/etc .......... go through the towns and villages.
Penzance, Hayle, Camborne, Redruth included. Let alone Okehampton, Bow, Copplestone, Crediton and Tiverton.

I don't go on the A30 but I don't go through Camborne or Redruth either.
Plenty of shops, pubs etc at the turn off I mentioned at the start of Camborne, Illogan, Bridge and Blackwater. Ridden it four times this year never had any trouble accessing services and have been doing it for years.

Yes - totally daft bit of routing. Stayed at the Premier Inn - very good safe modern one. Had a good curry at the Nawab in town

Day Three Tiverton to Portishead Premier Inn. 77 miles. Thankfully flat but got soaked three times.
Memo to self: never take a cycle path unless you can see where it’s going. I took one that started by the A38 after Bridgwater but veered away into a giant spiders web of an estate that got me and the Satnav totally lost.
And what a nightmare junction with the M5 - cycling in the middle of the road between M5 north and M5 south aiming for an Aroad somewhere ahead.
