The New A30 is a completely new road in many places, and takes a different route too.
The Old A30 is quite visible if you look at a map.

One way, is to check on an older map.
This for instance.

Hey Mick - what would be really useful to lots of people would be a .gpx (and even a printable map* .pdf) of your route that so many people, me included (both ways) have used. I'd be delighted to host it on my website as a free download. Rob

* I can produce the map very easily.

Ok Rob.
I'll get onto it later today and arrange the tracks properly.

I already have the tracks from my Chopper JOGLE prepared as someone wanted a copy. It's in GPX and FIT.
FIT is a smaller file size and my GPX tracks are very accurate as they were done at 1sec recording intervals. Converting to FIT reduces it considerably.

Just looking, the GPX is 123.5MB and the FIT is only 7.2MB.

Great if you email the FIT file to webmaster@cycle-endtoend.org.uk I'll sort it (and you can have your name in lights as the author!) It probably makes sense to also have a file of just the "old A30" segment so that people can incorporate that into their own routes - again I'll sort that from your "master file"

Hi Rob!
Home from a long walk with the doggie and came back soaking wet.

I'll eMail the JOGLE FIT files to you shortly.
For what it's worth, my sister-in-law and my sister have both moved house some time back, so any route to their homes is old and well gone. :D

As for the Old A30, I'll sort it as a separate thing from LE rather than to LE. I'll get onto that later. Maybe add on Okehampton via Rob's Passage to Tiverton and out to the A38.

I've got the first set of FIT files OK - I'll wait until I have the full nine yards before I look at how to present them.

Sorry, not got them off yet.

The last time I did a LEJOG was back in the days before I had a GPS device, so I don't have one as an actual ride. Done it the other way a few times! :D

I constructed the LE to East of Tiverton onto the A38 yesterday afternoon. Did it on BikeHikeUK, so the file will be ok as GPX perhaps.
I have a program called Ascent that I put things into and then export as required. I'll to the stuff shortly ............. having a cuppa after breakfast! ............. and email it to you. Ascent tends to make the GPX files bigger after import/export. I'll check, and if necessary convert them to FIT using Ja Va Wa RTWtool.
https://www.javawa.nl/rtwtool_en.html

I've divided the route into four sections, and also an alternative to going on the A30 at Chiverton Cross/Three Burrows. That bit is a bit busy and eventually the section from there to Carland Cross which is single carriageway is going to be dualled ......... and a two lane motorway by another name. Therefore, the alternative is a good one to bear in mind.

Looking forward to seeing these.

Last time I did it going straight over Dartmoor - not the flattest route

We see groups of (organised and supported?) cyclists coming down the A390 through Gunnislake to Tavistock and over Dartmoor.
Although it's a "good" route for the organised trips or for riders who like to take their time, it's not one that I would recommend at all.
"Hilly" is an understatement.

If people want to do Dartmoor, come down to the area for a weekend and ride the hills to your hearts' content, but as part of an End2End it's just hard work that can be avoided easily.

There's a good train service to Exeter or Plymouth and there's plenty B+Bs or campsites to stay at, so you can spend your days riding and the evenings in a pub! :D

Just spent a few minutes copying the maps off Ascent.
Four parts LE to Tiverton/A38 plus an alternative to avoid the future A30 dual carriageway.

I now have a selection of useful files from Mick so will sort/convert them in the next few days, create some maps and publish in a dedicated sub-section on the Cycle : End-to-End website . . . and then post a link here.

. . . all this activity is giving me itchy pedals to do it again . . .

Mick, your very accurate and sensible advice comes 12 years too late. Liskeard to Wellington via Dartmoor, unsupported was not the easiest day's cycling I have done

I've already got them - hence why I want to see Mick's route to get planning for next year

I'm working on a "kitchen pass" but my isn't keen about issuing one . . . what I REALLY want to do is ride from home at SuA to JOG then LE then home (that was my plan for 2015 - having done JOGLE in 2005 and LEJOG in 2010 - but serious illness (now recovered) put paid to the idea)

Exactly!

That's why when folk locally were egging me on to do a LEJOG, I put my foot down and did a LEJOG and Back to LE.
Living a day's ride from LE, it sort of made sense.

Given a lift to LE and then rode home.
Day off, then headed up to JOG and back.
2006, with some back-to-back 100mile days, but after turning round at JOG the heatwave hit me and I had to add a day on the way south to split one of the 100miles into two.

Wrote an account of it on Blogspot and added the first End2End from 1994 onto the beginning.
http://lejogandback.blogspot.com

The 1994 JOGLE account was copied and re-written from the diary I kept.

HEADS UP

The .gpx files and .pdf maps from Mick are now live for free download on the www.cycle-endtoend.org.uk website - under Resources/Planning/The south west & A30

There are 4 pairs of files items covering Mick's Land's End - Tiverton suggestions and a separate pair for the "old A30" route.

Big thank you to Mick for providing these - his comprehensive journals detailing a number of his E2E exploits will be on the site in the next week or so.
