Also takes care of the lack of shops after Langholm. Can’t remember seeing any shops between Langholm and the Pub at Yarrow (careful at that crossroads) or maybe even Peebles.
It was shut! 😞
Shame, you’ll have to go again.

We called in on Eskdalemuir Community Hub a few years ago, a couple of miles before Kagyu Samye Ling, and two cafe stops in as many miles would have been excessive even for me, so we passed it by. It's currently still closed because of covid but this may be of interest, I've already signed it.

Glad you got your bike back, Puffin. Did you have a reservation for the service you were stopped from loading it on?

At least you got the bike back Puffin - is it all OK after it's extra journey?

Some tyres are directional - look over the bars and any "chevron" shape should point forward - wisdom has it that water dispersion is better with the tread chevrons pushing it away - and arguably rolling resistance is lowered .... the first is true, I don't believe the latter would be noticed by a touring rider.

Easy enough. Remove the cap at the top of the stem, inside will be an Allen socket, loosen that with an Allen wrench, realign the handlebars perpendicular to the frame - I usually eye-ball this, but you can use a square if needed - then tighten the Allen socket, replace the cap and you are done. Couple of minutes work at most.

Sorry but that's not right. The top Allen bolt is used to set the pressure on the headset bearings. It's the two side steerer bolts that need slackening to line up the bars. Re-tighten the two side bolts when done.

This vid' is for torqueing up the headset but shows the 2 side bolts that need slackening. Only needs slackening enough so the bars can turn.

Edit - A better video.

The trick for aligning the bars is to stand astride the bike and look down over the bars so that you can see the hub in the front wheel - make sure the middle section of bars is parallel to the hub's axis.

... and if you've turned the bars it's always a good idea to check the headset bearing pre-load (i.e. the cap on an a-head set-up as up-thread) - grasp the upper headset cup with fingers around the steerer with left hand - with right hand apply front brake - then rock the steerer back and forth ... play should be minimal - then check that it's not too tight

Looks like you were lucky to finish your LEJOG with the rack.
