End to End book, out Thurs 1 April
Re: End to End book, out Thurs 1 April
I've just finished the book, definitively worth a read...
It made me think I should have a go at the record myself... then I realised I would need a calendar, rather than a stopwatch... oh well...

Hi there, If you want to read about what I believe to be the finest ever E-to-E Record ride, with the record still standing, try to lay hands on a copy of Martin Purser's "Crimes and Arnold - The story of two great racing cyclists, Friends and Rivals". Published by the Tricycle Association, it tells the story of Albert Crimes and John Arnold. Two real Corinthian cyclists.

Just collected my copy from the library.
1. Flicked through it and there is not a single photo of Mick F!
2. Not too keen on the cheap paper the publishers have used.

Thanks for sharing; I'll pass on your criticisms to the paper department.
Hope the rest of the book is worth more than the paper it's written on.
At least you didn't actually buy a copy.

Bit of a confusing book, first you're writing about riders on penny farthings, then you've set off from Lands end to Bristol and next you've gone back 100 years!
I've bought a few books in my time and only kept a few, one of the best was Alan Sugar's book.

Agreed, disappointing - especially when compared with other E2E tomes - glad I didn't pay for the copy I read.philvantwo wrote: ↑25 May 2021, 1:48pm Bit of a confusing book, first you're writing about riders on penny farthings, then you've set off from Lands end to Bristol and next you've gone back 100 years!

Afraid I'm taking it back to the library, it's very poorly written and it's just too confusing with far too many meaningless paragraphs that have obviously been just written to fill the book up.
Shame really as I was so looking forward to reading it, the only positive thing is I didn't actually buy it.

Crikey. Get off the fence, chaps
This just in: “End to End is one of the best cycling books I've read... the disparate main threads intertwine brilliantly into a coherent, delicate narrative. 10/10”

Some really positive comments there, cheers chaps.
Don't really know how to respond to Phil Vantwo. I guess it'd be a boring world if we all liked the same thing.
Maybe someone who doesn't regard Alan Sugar as the highpoint of all books will be able to take it out now you've kindly returned it.

Be interesting to know how many copies have been sold?
Re: End to End book, out Thurs 1 April
I sold one to a library but they sent it back; said someone came in and said it had 'meaningless paragraphs' and 'wasn't a patch on Alan Sugar'.
Re: End to End book, out Thurs 1 April
I have just finished his book having got it for Christmas but didn't start reading it till the new year.
The historical chapters were ace going a balanced amount of detail but also where possible up-to-date interviews which were quite moving!
His own end to end was woven into it being traumatic and human contrasting with the superhuman efforts of the following chapters.
The wider phycological stress he was under was during this time wasn't shied away from but for many would be too emollient.
All in all an interesting read and a gateway to the wider lejog genre.
