End to End book, out Thurs 1 April
End to End book, out Thurs 1 April
Hi everyone. Shameless plug for my book about the end to end. It's called End to End. Hope this is ok.
It's out in hardback via Little, Brown in about 5 weeks time.
It's a look at the record over time, featuring many amazing people, with a wider exploration of why we do this journey (or any journey, I suppose).
Emily Chappell says, "A wonderful book, could not recommend it more. I laughed out loud in several places, and cried at least once. If you know anyone planning to ride LEJOG (at whatever pace), you should definitely buy it for them"
Paul Fournel says, "a brilliant book, a triple trip : one on the road, one in history and one into the author's mind. Cycling is about all that."
Max Leonard says, "captures so much of what ties us to the land, and the obscure forces that push us all to do inexplicably difficult things"
You can get it anywhere. If you get it from storysmith in Bristol (they send) it'll be a signed copy.

Even though I’m not in it, apparently this is a very good read despite the glaring omission....

Mick, that’s if you don’t get lost...
Re: End to End book, out Thurs 1 April
My first JOGLE and my LEJOG+Back, then my JOGLE on the Chopper, the mileages came out as 889.3miles, 891.4miles, 897.3miles, and 892.1miles.
Fairly short distances taking the main-ish routes.

But that’s going via the chippy...
Re: End to End book, out Thurs 1 April
Seriously, what is the shortest route legally achievable by a cyclist?
I'm willing to bet that it's more than 842miles.

“What is the minimum distance, by road where cycling is permitted, for LEJOG?”
The signposts at both Land’s End and John O’Groats indicate a distance of 874 miles (1,407 km) to their counterpart, which is often taken as the shortest road distance between the two points.

Shortest route I've come across is 838.8, published by the Road Records Association (but it does go through Wigan and the Standish crossroads ), starting from the Land's End Hotel and finishing at a drain grating by the left edge of the mini roundabout before the JO'G Hotel.
Dawes Galaxy 1979; Mercian 531 1982; Peugeot 753 1987; Peugeot 531 Pro 1988; Peugeot 653 1990; Bob Jackson 731 OS 1992; Gazelle 731 OS Exception 1996; Dolan Dedacciai 2004; Trek 8000 MTB 2011; Focus Izalco Pro 2012

Google Maps says 866 miles but that's using a lot of main roads and it was something I've worked out over about 5 mins!
It reckons 814 miles if you can use motorways.
603 miles if you fly it directly which is my favourite record - 46 mins, 44 seconds by an F4 Phantom in 1988.
