Runcorn Widnes Bridge Reopened

Post by Pete Owens »

The Silver Jubilee Bridge between has just reopened - and is rather more pleasant than it used to be:

So now there is another option for crossing the Mersey.

Blimey - the bridge has been completely rebuilt!

(I grew up near Widnes and can just remember going on the old transporter bridge, and the excitement of watching the new bridge being built to replace it.)

St Helens, and ditto for the Transporter. (And walked up a tower of the Bilbao Transporter a few years ago.)

I don't remember the new bridge being built, but I remember seeing it looming up there when we went to the new swimming pool in Runcorn. Before that in the old St Helens municipal pool you walked along the sides in outdoor gear to get to the cubicles. In stinging chlorine vapour. No changing rooms, but large rooms with public baths with wooden lids for those who didn't have a bath at home.

I remember those baths and that pungent smell too - thanks for the memory!

I was Rainhill, so kind of midway between Widnes and St Helens.

I live in Widnes and the silver jubilee bridge is a vast improvement over the old one. Even the road network around it is vastly better. Can’t stand the new bridge mind you and the roads around it, I always take the old bridge if possible.

I live on the Wirral and regularly do laps of the Mersey. Normally I go under it through the Birkenhead tunnel, allowed before 6am and use the old bridge to cross over again at Runcorn.
