Camping help August 2021

Post by Danny2156 »

Finally made the plunge and booked time off work and train tickets to Penzance from West Yorkshire. I expected camp sites would be readily available, but no! Everywhere I try for first few days when in Cornwall, is booked.
I'm thinking my options are wild camping, which I have never done, but will give it a go. Or join the Warm Showers site. Has anyone experience of either in Cornwall?

airbnb in non-resort spots ? (even in the west country, they do exist, especially for one person)
Not camping, but probably not much more expensive. Worth it for the showers imho!

I stopped here last year on my first night LEJOG, on the edge of Bodmin Moor. Very low key campsite, good facilities and I was able to use their kitchen. Some friendly workers were stopping in the owner’s bungalow and gave me some of their food!

They do a backpacker rate of £6.

It did mean I had a long first day!

Good luck!

I'm a trendy consumer. Just look at my wobbly bog brush using hovercraft full of eels

Campsites in August, especially this year, will be very busy with everyone doing stay-cations.
These we used for the first few days.

The Camping and Caravanning Club sites generally don't turn away cycle campers and can be worth a try. They also have hundreds of "CL" sites which you could try but you may need to join the Club to use them?.
Of course a lot depends on your route and ours was generally determined by the sites that would accept the size of group we were. A couple of sites I tried could only accept one or two tents, due to the facilities they had, so a single cyclist/tent may have better luck.
My advice would be to book your accommodation, no matter what kind, as quickly as possible. Especially in Scotland as we struggled due to there not being as many campsites. Having said that "wild camping|" is legal in Scotland.
