That's about 190 x 135 mm. Say 233 mm diagonal.

How about an iPad?

Screen measures 5.2cm x 9cm so you should be able to scale up or down from this image to see the actual size.120.jpg
For following a pre planned road route, I don't need most of that detail, just the junction on screen and a clear indication of the road I need to take.
Try Garmin City Navigator.

The second one is a route in GPX track format.
Montana will calculate the route for you with turn-by-turn directions like a normal satnav if you want. Personally, I'd rather create my own.

Give me a short while, and I'll get mine to create a route and take a screenshot.

You're still into the realms of usability there - the whole point of a cycling GPS is that it fits reasonably unobtrusively onto or just in front of the bars while still giving you bar space to mount lights, a bell etc
If you put a small TV screen on there you end up with all sorts of issues around mounting it, where it ends up in a crash, the bits of bar space it occupies... And the fact that 95% of the time, you simply don't need anything that big.

Assuming you're following a pre-planned route (which I'm guessing you are for a LEJOG), on the road mapping for a bike ride, you need the road you're on and a tiny amount of stuff either side, literally just junctions off and maybe things like river/railway crossings which are useful navigational fixes. Other than that, what is off a mile either side is of no interest or use to you - if you go off route it'd be handy for the GPS to show you that road in more detail but really you're doing little more than following directions.

Same as driving while following a sat nav - what is off to one side of the motorway is of no use or interest and in fact displaying it on screen is just an extra un-needed distraction.

It's different for a sort of "I'm riding randomly around the countryside" tour but as this is in the LEJOG sub-forum, I'm, kind of assuming you've plotted your daily route from A to B via the various landmarks you want to see - all the GPS needs to do is take you from one to the next.

Sorry, can't do a route like that without showing my location!

The Montana will create a route from where you are, to any point on the map, including turn-by-turn info.
You can say which vehicle - including bike and walking - and avoidance of toll roads and highways - and doing off-road and trails if you want it.

New garmin update shows white chevrons on your route now. Happy with my edge 830 and the out front mount is loads safer than looking down to one mounted on the stem. 20hr battery life and a power pack is available for another 20hrs usage.
But as per usual somebody has a model that beats everything else hands down. Well mine has bluetooth AND WiFi so there!! :D

Yes, the later stuff has bluetooth and Wifi, but mine is still a wired connection system.
The cadence sensor (if you wanted it) and the temperature thingy are ANT ..... a Gamin bluetooth system.

I've cut that to save screen space but the big problem with any paper list of instructions like that is that if you go off route - and that can happen with eg a road closure - is that getting back on track can be difficult.

How about a 1:100,000 map marked with a high lighter pen? Then fold it to A6 size just like you would with a route sheet. Where you are passing through a big town have route sheet instructions. Then mount them the same A6 size with a zip lock bag if it is raining. Switch between map or route sheet depending on complexity and frequency of turns.

Keep route sheet instructions to the minimum and compact. For instance you don’t need to list every roundabout you cross or traffic lights you pass through if you are just going straight on. If you are in same road like A road or B road you don’t need to list every twist and turn. Just an instruction for when you leave them assuming it’s properly signed.

A list of places you pass through each day also useful backup and often good enough outside of built up areas. Remember you are not under time pressure and stopping and looking at sign posts is fine.

I've been on this forum for so long, anyone with half a brain could work out our address and postcode!

Even if they couldn't, they could could come to Gunnislake and ask. Most people know us, so it's not difficult.
