Mike's JOGLE

Post by Koi »

I've finally booked my JOGLE, well everything except my transport home from Lands End.

I'm a born again cyclist; I was very keen when I was a youngster but packed in before I turned 19, I've had 32 years off but started again last September. I bought a new bike & have been gradually increasing my mileage... up to over 70 miles per trip now (78 last Sunday) so I reckon I'm fit enough although I've had a bit of pain in the side of my knees which is a slight concern.

I live in Bolton & will be flying from Manchester to Edinburgh, then Wick, on Friday 22nd July. From Wick I'll cycle up to the accomodation I've booked 3 miles south of John O'Groats in preparation for my tour the following day. I'm going via Altnaharra, Beauly, Fort William, Inverary (via Glencoe), Brodick (Isle of Arran), Dumfries, Ambleside, Bolton, Criggion, Hay on Wye, Cheddar, Crediton, Padstow, Lands End (Saturday 6th August).

I'm a Bolton Wanderers fan so I'm going to do the ride in honour of Nat Lofthouse.
Nat was a former Bolton & England player who died in January this year, aged 85, he was highly respected, especially in Bolton but also throughout the country & even the world.

I've still got to set up the Charity (Cancer Research) & also a website, but hopefully that will be completed in the next few weeks.

I'm making good progress on my website but would like to add a map of the Uk with my route highlighted on it, can anyone advise a good source for me to do this?

I've been toying with the same idea...I plotted my overnight stops on Google Maps then screen dumped, you can see the result here :

http://riinger.blogspot.com/

I think you can go further if you want the full route (or screen dump from bikehike or bikeroutetoaster ?)

I see from the shadow of your route on the GB map that you plan on cycling about 10 miles up :?

80 mile training ride to Chester today, I'd planned to do a little detour on the way back to increase my mileage, but the weather was atrocious so I came back the same route I went!
Less than 6 weeks to my JOGLE now, so only 5 more training rides to go, I'm beginning to think I wish I'd booked it earlier.... except for the crap weather.

80 miles for me yesterday too... in the Cotswolds.... Head-winds, side-winds and sideways rain, the weather was horrendous.
It was definitely the worst training day I’ve experienced in the last 14 months. And I rode all through the winter.
Still, only a quick 24 miles on Tuesday (Average 17 mph – quick for me!) then a week of R&R off the bike. I leave Oxfordshire a week on Friday and start my JOGLE on Sunday 26th

I did 75 over the Mendips inc. up Cheddar Gorge yesterday only because I wanted to train in the rain! Weather was so bad they cancelled Bristol's Biggest Bike Ride quite understandably!

St Austell to Bristol (charity/training ride) this weekend and BBC forecast heavy rain for Friday! Oh, what fun that will be?

I'm planning on riding DOWN Cheddar Gorge on my JOGLE, but of course, as you'll be well aware, I'll need to get up the hill to top of the gorge first, here's my route:

http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/29397942

I'm actually cycling from Hay on Wye on that day (88 mile, my longest day's cycling), but I can't find a map that will take me across the Severn or Avonmouth bridge's, I've therefore had to split my ride up into chunks.

Anyway, what do you think of this section of my route? is it worth the extra effort to 'do the gorge'?

Good luck on your trip.
