We Did It! Ellie and Matts JOGLE

Post by MPurslow »

After 19 days, a little under 10 punctures (all but one of those on my bike- of which 6 were in the first 6 days) we have successfully cycled from John O Groats to Lands End!

What a completely wonderful experience, met so many friendly and amazing people intrigued that we could cycle so far and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Shout out to John from Glasgow who kindly rode with us out of Glasgow when we managed to lose our way- big "Thank You", we may still be stuck in Glasgow now if it wasn't for you!
Over the next few days going to try and compile some reviews for Campsites/BnB's that we stayed in for people to use for future rides, as on the whole, would recommend over 90% of them!

Saw many End to Enders during our bike ride, including a group of 3 men who finished no more than 10 minutes before us- (carrying much less weight- I may add)

And the best thing- We've raised over £700 for the British Lung Foundation, thank you to everyone who's posted blogs and information on this forum, its been so useful and reassuring.

Yes i really enjoyed our journey! As someone who hadnt cycled more than about 10 miles this time last year, and did only a handful of practice rides (up to about 45ish miles), i relied on fitness from other sports to see me through!
So id like to say it really is possible for anyone who wants to to complete, im by no means a honed cyclist though im keen to do more cycle tours now :) As i didnt find it all that impossible and i think we coped well!

Huge thanks to everyone we spoke to, also the 2 nice people who donated en route and helped us out of bideford and the woman at lands end who also donated, and all the advice i got off these forums as a novice rather scared by the prospect of 1000 miles of cycling!

That bits true you know! Our longest day was 80 miles and we did a maximum of 50 in training! Not the recommended training strategy, but we didn't have the time due to A Level Exams!

Thank you Nigel! As long as you've trained sufficiently and are prepared you'll be fine. Just take it slow, enjoy the ride and treasure the moment. Well worth doing, it really is.
Thank you Gavin Also! :)

Well done.
What did you make of the journey south from Glasgow towards England?See many potholes?
I just got a single puncture on my trip, you were unlucky with 6,
i got mine about 800 miles into the journey.

Glasgow -> south was fine. We followed the Motorway service road. The B road that runs along side the motorway (M6? (Possibly not)). Not the most scenic of roads but relatively flat and what I can remember in pretty good condition!

Oh- and a warning to any End to Enders. Be prepared to be shocked by the state of the John O Groats Hotel! They've painted it in rainbow colours! Looks horrendous!

As for cornwall being the worst bit, Devon was the section that killed us! But we did go through exmoor so i dont know if thats our choice of route, most people seem to go further south
