Hello there Mike good luck with the ride... I am starting on the 16th May at LE. Taking a similar route to you but slightly different in places. 2 of us unsupported on hybrid bikes. We aim to do it in 10 days so depending on your trip time our paths may cross. All the best. Andy

I would suggest crossing the Severn at Gloucester and going along the south side. It is much flatter that way and its rather a pleasant area to cycle in.
I'm planning to do a more scenic 14 day JOGLE starting on 18th May

You realise the route between Ardgay and Invershin includes carrying your bike down a flight of stairs at the river bridge? That route is good for people visiting the hostel at Carbisdale, but with the hostel being closed for major repairs I'm not sure of any advantage in going that way. The route via Bonar is less undulating and tortuous allowing you to make a faster time, and although carrying more motor traffic, this is unlikely to be of any concern.

I've gone this way through Preston 4 times now. Just a slight difference. Never a problem, and a pub on the quay if you want it

From Widnes - follow waterloo road and pick up the bus lane that goes to the bridge. Extensive roadworks on the Runcorn Widnes bridge at the moment, bike lane/ path is a coned off section of road on the southbound lane, and road itself is 1 lane each way. Doesn't look a quick job.
Your route through Runcorn is harder than needs be -see below I use most of this on my commute from Frodsham.
You are spot on to Tarpoley, but I'd miss Tarpoley itself out - take Eaton Lane to cut the corner.

Hi Mike
The route through Lancaster and Carnforth would be unpleasant - I live locally.
Much better to get onto the cycle path at Sainsburys just before the A6 takes you over the river (I can give you precise directions) and follow the path along the Lune to Halton, then you've got some lovely quiet roads all the way to Tebay.
