Route complete - comments??
Re: Route complete - comments??
I rode the trans pennine from widnes to Warrington last week and some of it is thick mud. This because they are resurfacing it, so might be finished by the time your travelling.
Always happy to meet up in Runcorn and take you over the bridge.

Hi, I'm looking at best way through Taunton, coming from the B3227/A358 and was thinking of joining the Route 3 at Obridge along the canal and out to Creech St Michael. Would love to know if this is a good route to follow and advice from anyone who's done this recently. Thanks.

Original poster here, finally checking back on the forum after lots of other committments (including lots of riding - and off on a 5 day tour this Monday!).
cycloret - thanks for your list of OSM maps available - the UK ones I've downloaded are from garmin.openstreetmap.nl, and I think I'll just stick with them. The contour map from talkytoaster sounds good, but think I'll live without that. The Garmin 810 has a nice contour screen which lets you see ahead. I've also just purchased a "Gomadic" which I read about on another forum - used 4 AA batteries, and can plug into the Garmin if you run out of battery life.
bigfoot - Read carefully your suggestions for before and after Runcorn, and I've mapped your Cliff Rd, Ball Lane, Kingsley, Frodsham route (on paper anyway) as an alternate. You don't make the NCN 5 sound very attractive -not anxious to get lost in too many fields. My route ater the Trans Pennine Way is from SJXT on this forum, if you have other roads you ride to suggest, I'd love ot hear about them!
sjgreen - Was hoping someone would answer your post about the 3 along the canal in Taunton! I'm always looking for the quiet way through towns, but I'm also afraid of making our days endlessly long by always taking the slowest route - it's a real trade-off!

Re: Route complete - comments??
Hi Linda B
I hope you don't mind me saying your route from Lands End to Penzance is quite hilly (and steep) in places and it will take you over twice the time than if you use the A30 (especially with the westerly wind behind you)!
Your route is also hilly to Redruth. You do realise you are climbing to the top of Blackrock, the views are excellent, but for your first day it can be tiring. Once you get to the top, it a good ride into Redruth.
I would cycle on the cycle network through St Erth to Hayle (the cycle network takes you on St Georges Walk which is a nice cycle pass the Copperhouse Pool) onto the B3301 to Portreath and then on the B3300, left towards Porthtowan and divert to head to Mawla where you will meet up with your original route. The only large hill will be outside Hayle which is just a long gentle climb and a hill the other side of Godrevy. The scenery on a clear day is superb as you are cycling next to the North Ciffs overlooking the Atlantic ocean and there are cafés at Godrevy, Hells Mouth and Portreath which you could take advantage of if you get tired. I would say the mileage is around the same, if not a little shorter, but you will cover the mileage quicker (unless you are to busy stopping to take photos)
Your route from Blackwater to Perranporth is a good choice, mainly flat and fast and a superb ride down into the town...which means a climb up. It is true what they say, Cornwall and Devon are worst for hills.
Have a great trip

Re: Route complete - comments??
Jeremy, Just mapped your suggestions, thought NOT the A30 part. I have had that in mind for an alternate, but figure we can switch to that without needing the route in the gps. We'll have to ride this section twice, since we'll arrive by train in Penzance at 3:18 pm one day, bike to LE, and return that way the next day when we "really" start. I'm assuming we'll use the A30 route on the second time through, but I'll let the group decide. I'm figuring the traffic wouldn't be too bad on a Sunday morning? One reason for going the hillier way at least once is that I'd like to go to Mousehole.
My mapping shows:
Revised version http://ridewithgps.com/routes/4273844 54.2 mi +3860 ft
Old version http://ridewithgps.com/routes/4119222 54.8 mi +3893 ft
Assuming I haven't misinterpreted your suggestions, it's not a big overall savings in climbing feet according to those statics, but I realize the numbers don't say everything about what the hills feel like, and the grades! And the coastal roads sound delightful, so I'm planning to go that way. Thanks for the suggestions!
Linda

Re: Route complete - comments??
Hi Linda
Just one slight amendment. After cycling the nice route on St Georges V Memorial Walk, do not go right as the surface is terrible. Instead cycle along Glebe Way and Brookway
Just looked at the rest of your route and it is almost the same as my route when I completed JOGLE.
Have a great time

Hi Linda
I'll let you know how we get on, we shall be there in about 4 weeks time unless we are pushed for time and take the more direct route - as you say, it's a trade off!
I am very grateful to you for posting all your routes here, I've been able to refer to them when planning our trip, though unlike you I still have several days to finalise and we start on 20th April!
Best wishes, Sharon

The canal out of Taunton should be fine (unless your are loaded on skinny tyres).
From the side of town you are coming from it can be easily picked up at the Railway Station or more easily via Obridge Road, just before mile 29 on your days route, or from Priorswood Road, through the entrance to Priorswood Industrial estate just after the (busy) roundabout at mile 29 marker. (The industrial estate is not as bad as it sounds being mostly car showrooms)
The canal can easily and peacefully be followed to continue your route at Creech St Michael (Mile 33) . Or you could contine along the canal until you hit the A361 at Lower Durston turning right to pick up your route again at Burrowbridge.
The canal is 95% 'cindertrack' type paved surface in the areas described.

Re: Route complete - comments??
Thanks Moonboy that's good to know. I'm planning on taking the canal path right up to Bridgwater, it looks like a pleasant easy ride before the delight of Cheddar!
Re: Route complete - comments??
I'm riding up to Bridgwater on May the 10th, and I'll be on the A38 straight up Taunton Road, just like I've done on numerous occasions.
88miles from here. Leave via Tavistock and Okehampton, then Bow and Copplestone, Crediton and Rob's Passage, Tiverton - and eat my lunch at the bus station under the trees by the tourist info centre - then via the old road through Halberton and Turnpike to Waterloo Cross (near J27 M5) and follow the A38 north.
Go though Wellington town centre for a sit-down on the benches by the traffic lights, then carry on though Taunton town centre on the A38 and carry on to Bridgwater. (Morrisons on the left at the T junction). Turn right there on Monmouth Road and stay at The Admiral Blake.
............. as you can tell, I know the way.

Re: Route complete - comments??
You can gain the canal more easily from your entry into Taunton I can let you have a route if you are still making adjustments.
There is a nice little lock side tea room on the canal mid way between Taunton and Bridgwater.
In general, when not in a hurry, I have often taken the Tiverton canal from Tiverton to just outside Wellington (and vice versa) the surface is ok but not paved.

Re: Route complete - comments??
I've been off on a 5 day tour here in Northern California - of course, it decided to rain much of the week, even with our drought conditions! Much needed rain-training, as well as plenty of hills. Now back to our routes...
Moonboy, thanks for the Taunton Canal information; I've now got us taking the Obridge Rd. access to the canal path now. I'm not familiar with the term "cindertrack" - can you explain? We'll be on Continental Gatorskins 25s, which are usually OK on paths.
Sharon - Will be watching for any comments about your experinces next month!

I'd take it to mean fine compacted grit which Gatorskins will be fine on. I put mine through a lot worse as you saw from the video of the tow path.

The Admiral Blake is up for sale as the owners are looking to retire. Look at the enamel ctc and ncu signs adorning the walls

Re: Route complete - comments??
Route through Lancaster is a bit odd. The cycle path from Glasson is fine and becomes Tarmac onto st George's quay. But, you should cross the millennium cycle bridge then across toward Ryalands Park before picking up the A6. Stay on that for half a mile until it meets the canal. Looks like you are on the canal towpath which is ok but a bit slow with bridges and dog walkers, the surface is decaying Tarmac. You need a bell. Most end to Enders stay on the a6 although I prefer the canal for slow day rides when I'm down there.
