A recent LEJOG using hostels etc?

Post by boink »

Can anyone point me to a recent, online account of a Lands End to John o' Groats tour, completed in two weeks using YHA's/travelodges/B&B's? I'm doing it with some fellow forty + year olds this summer and want a route which allows time for a bit of sightseeing. My total maximum time allocated would be 16 days, inc getting to LE and back from JOG. I live in the west midlands.

I know a lot of folk say that planning is half the fun, but it's the half I'm likely to mess up!

I've got the CTC pack, but would really appreciate a more recent account, due to hostels closing and all that.

You could start here .... http://www.users.waitrose.com/~ianclare/links.htm - for the Ultimate resource (or the book published by Epic is pretty good)

... and for a B&B route (albeit the JOGLE, but you could turn the map round) have a look at No 176 in the links - or go to www.beewee.co.uk and the obvious link

Definately check out Robs journal (we found it useful planning our journey), and the list of E2E journals is a very good resource.

Our journal is at http://www.hotshot-it.co.uk/sw/

You can flick through the site or follow the link for a pdf of the journal, print and read at your leisure!

Good luck with the planning.

I don't have an online account, but I stayed at the following:

Penzance (YHA)
Golant (YHA)
Exeter (YHA)
Bristol (stayed at my home)
Ludlow (B&B)
Warrington (motel)
Kendal (YHA)
Lockerbie (B&B)
Loch Lomond (SYHA)
Corran (Bunkhouse)
Inverness (SYHA)
Helmsdale (independent YH)
Then back on the sleeper train.

My route was a mixture of CTC and viamichelin.com (select the "bike" option).

Thanks everyone for the ver useful list of links and web diaries. Plenty of great reading and tips for me and my mates in there. With any luck I'll have a story of my own in August!

I too don't have an online account, but I stayed at the following (loosely following CTC YHA route):

St Just (YHA) for Land's End
Golant (YHA)
Moretonhampstead (Independant hostel)
Street (YHA)
Ross on Wye (Friend)
Clun (YHA)
Chester (Family)
Slaidburn (YHA)
Carlisle (Family)
Wanlockhead (Independant hostel
Loch Lomond (SYHA)
Glencoe (SYHA)
Loch Ness (SYHA)
Bonar Bridge (B&B)
Tongue (SYHA)
Met at JOG and lift back to Inverness airport for return flight!
