Mandy Jones

Postby TrevA » 29 Nov 2018, 1:10pm

I've been watching a few videos on the Rouler Classic, which was a day of celebration of cycling itself and looking forward to the 2019 World championships in Yorkshire. One of the guests they had on stage was Mandy Jones, which brought memories flooding back for me, of the 1982 World Champs at Goodwood, when Mandy won the women's race. I'm happy to say that I was there and I can still remember the tingle up my spine as she came up the hill alone , in front on the last lap to win the race. We were just at the top of the hill near the last corner about 500 yards from the finish line and she came past with a 10 second lead, which she managed to hold to the line.

I'd only gone down to Goodwood on a whim, making a last minute decision to drive down on Friday afternoon and I stayed at Portsmouth Youth Hostel and rode out from there. So glad that I did.

I too was there, right at the finish line, also having ridden from Portsmouth. "Tingle up my spine" barely describes it.

For most of the women's and amateur races I spent the day criss-crossing the circuit using the internal road by Goodwood House, so saw riders twice each lap. For the professional riders on the Sunday this was not possible because there were many more people, so I watched on the last hill about 1/2 mile before the finish.

Brilliant! Thanks for the link TrevA. That was a blast from the past!

We were there, but not near the finish. My wife and I (we were actually married the following year) did a youth-hostel tour from our homes in Cheshire, saw the racing at Goodwood, and went on to finish at my grandparents' in Broadstairs.
