Sacrilege - rack on a Catrike 700

Postby UpWrong » 11 Feb 2018, 10:08pm

I've been using ICE sidepod bags on the Cat but it's a bit of a fumble particularly in the dark. So I've fitted a rack which should get me out of the door and home quicker on my commute. Another plus is being able to fit a dutch style light/reflector unit. I used a couple of reflector brackets to connect the forward rack stays to the Finer Recliner headrest. Rather pleased how neat it is. Photos here: https://1drv.ms/a/s!AmuVLk0nWAz9gZ4iuK7mWF_5rv9RdQ

That's very neat indeed. Is it a specific rack for the Catrike?

No, the rack is a Hebie rack. It came on a Metabikes bent I had which I sold and is now in Canada I understand.

Just as long as all those little plastic links connecting it into the headrest frame don't see a serious compression load

PS: thought you were a weight weenie?

No sure I'd want them to see serious load in any direction...
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.

The plastic reflector brackets are pretty robust actually and only maintain the racks vertical position, they don't take any luggage load. I can lift the trike by the rear rack and it feels solid enough. Yes, all that weight, and in the worst possible place as well. Plus aerodynamic drag :( but increased convenience and visibility I think :D

Rode to work on it twice this week, including one ride in torrential rain. Nice to have the larger light/reflector positioned there at 28" above the ground. I noticed the change in CoG immediately compared to using seat bags, but it's ok as long as you keep it in mind. It still whizzes down the hills faster than the road bikes, and It's made it easier to get sorted out in terms of lock, lights, gloves, helmet etc before setting off home in the evening.
