Speedmachine - continuously under repair
Re: Speedmachine - continuously under repair
On a serious note, one possibility might be to get a tandem stoker stem. It might be too short but possibly you could use the top half of your broken stem. Tube diameters are obviously going to be critical.
I’m surprised that it’s steel, all the ones I’ve seen have been aluminium (except for the folding tiller on my Nazca which might be stainless steel).

Yeah, I assumed it wouldn't be steel, based on how it cracked (like ripping apart an alu can) but it passed the magnet test.
If I had a baby elephant, I would put it on a recumbent trike so that it would become invisible.

Tiller stem currently €159 from HP. The clamp is a pretty weird large size, so not sure what else would fit. There was a recall on the original SPM tiller stems for cracking. Maybe you can try HP for a new one if this is one of the faulty originals?

Re: Speedmachine - continuously under repair
As this is a second hand bike I doubt I could claim on a product recall. Also not sure how to tell if it is the original model.
I have had an offer of a replacement part from someone, so hope that works out.

If you give Kevin a ring at DTek he will possibly have something to fit second hand.

You may find that a Performer tiller will fit. Worth checking out at least if you can't find an original.

I rather like the title of this thread -after all, aren’t all enthusiast owned bikes ‘continuously under repair’?
I currently have three bikes out of five in pieces at the moment, which is probably taking it to extremes . . .

It's in sharp contrast to my Fixed gear which is never under repair and has maintained this condition for >10 years (minus swapping components time).
I have had a kind offer from a BHPC member to fix my tiller, updates as/when.

New tiller/bar combo - relying heavily on the kindness of strangers.
I could do with extending the tiller a bit, but that's as far as it goes. As a fringe benefit, this has massively changed the run for the gears (they were wrapped to the tiller before) and I can now easily change the front gear! (Brucey will be pleased, I even trimmed off the excess cable).
Now I need to bleed the rear hydraulic brakes and maybe change brake pads (further learning curve).

Re: Speedmachine - continuously under repair
Have fixed the mudguards - mostly this involved brute force, though the front mudguard M5 hole is blocked by the suspension (I think) which means that I have to do this:
Also, I have developed a high tech workstand for when the rear wheel is removed (patent pending)
Also fitted bike computer and messed around with cables.
So, rear brakes next - I think if I can I will make use of the govt £50 voucher scheme and get my LBS to do it.
Also, fitting bottle cage. Either drilling here
or doing something like this:

(I like this because there's less chance of permanently breaking the seat)

Or use the stem? (IIRC it was a Minoura mount.)belgiangoth wrote:Also, fitting bottle cage. Either drilling here....or doing something like this:

Won't that affect the handling?
