A list of routes people can vouch for as suitable for
three-wheeled cycles, upright or recumbent. Thank you !

Key information please:

1. Route name (if any)
2. Location (County, nearest Town)
3. Website and/or map link
4. GPX file link (if any)

5. After that, any comments relevant for tricyclists (recumbent or upright), or things to watch out for.

e.g.

Dundee to Arbroath Coastal (NCN1)

Dundee to Arbroath Coastal (NCN1)
Tayside, Scotland

There is now a dedicated cycle path through the docks, suitable for trikes. A detour may be needed at Balmossie, as the cycle path bridge over Dighty Burn is only JUST wide enough for an ICE Adventure (A "Q" is too wide).

Warminster to Bath circuit

Post by climo »

Warminster, Frome, Radstock, Bath, Bradford on Avon Warminster. Trike friendly though may be a blockage on the outskirts of Frome where the council are trying to stop fly tipping with large rocks on the path.

NCN24, NCN4, NCN254, Quiet roads, railway path, canal path.
About 47 miles. Many train stations, pubs, coffee shops. Fairly good signs.

NCN24. Warminster via Longleat Estate (free bike access) to Frome on quiet roads.
Partly railway path to Radstock.
Mainly railway path to Bath via twin tunnels

NCN4 Mainly Canal path East to Bradford on Avon.

NCN254 Quiet roads via Westbury to near Warminster then a bit of busier road back to the start.

Plan on Cycle.travel

Onwards routes NCN4 west to Bristol via Railway Path and eastwards to Devizes on the canal.

Tarka Trail

Tarka Trail
Devon
Braunton, Barnstaple, Bideford

Southern loop, Braunton to Meeth via Barnstaple, entirely off-road.
Busy at weekends in season, good surface for whole route
Puffing Billy Cafe serves excellent cake, Bull & Dragon Pub in Meeth recommended for their pies.

Great Glen Cycle way

Post by climo »

Needs no introduction. Almost entirely on cycle paths and canal paths apart from the first day.

Inverness to Oban is easier due to 1400ft pass on first day being more gradual in that direction.
One day on gravel tracks which is hard work on a trike.
The odd gate but all are passable (easier with 2 people!) on trikes. Warning - Coming into Fort William and near the town centre the signed route takes you across a foot bridge with a double dogleg which is a real issue on a trike. Saves you a few hundred yards on the main road but wastes 30 minutes.

Lots on campsites.
Best to do this no later than May 20th or after Sept 15th to avoid midges.
A really great route.

I've done a few while on tour ..........

Brampton Valley Way:- NCN 6, Northampton to Market Harbour, 4 gates and you need lights for the tunnels.

Tissington Trail:- NCN 68, Ashbourne up. I haven't done the High Peaks Trail which joins it.

South Tyne Trail:- NCN 68, Haltwhistle up, a few gates.

Kielder forest:- I've only done NCN 68, 1 ford. But there's probably a lot more in that area.

The Cinder Track:- NCN 1, Whitby to Scarborough.

Reservoirs :- Rutland Water, loads of gates. Draycote water. Derwent Reservoir. Pitsford Water.

Luck ........ :D

Bristol to Bath cycle path linked to the 2 tunnels route with a return leg on the Kennet and Avon canal towpath. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/33406745
Can also be extended along the canal towpath to Bradford on Avon.

Yatton to WSM using the Strawberry line and various cycle paths into WSM.
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31377387

Bristol Docks to Portishead leaving Bristol along the river Avon towpath. Passing beneath the M5 and following local cycle paths into Portishead. Crossing the river via the Avonmouth bridge cycle path and returning to Bristol on the cyclepath alongside the Portway.
The river Avon towpath can be quite dirty, the route is tree lined for a large part and the leaf mould does produce a lot of debris at times. The surface is uneven in parts but thoroughly passable on a trike. I have ridden it with a large group on a number of occasions.

A short circular ride from Ashton court in Bristol with interesting views of the city. Some of the barriers are a bit tight but passable with care.
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29172400

A short circuit leaving from the Mshed in Bristol chosen because the car park is accessible and reasonably priced. The route follows the route of the river Frome through Eastville park and on into Oldbury Court before going through Fishponds to pick up the Bristol to Bath cycle route for the return leg.
