Recumbents on trains
Recumbents on trains
Hi all, happy Easter [emoji235][emoji214]
Late this year in taking part in a ride from London to York to raise money for Samaritans. Does anyone have experience of taking 'bent on the train, specifically the East Coast line back to London?

Re: Recumbents on trains
^^^ watches carefully, as we have the same bike.
Re: Recumbents on trains
If it's a SWB bent then I think rail companies will treat it like any non-folding bike, so see their cycle booking policies. I recall booking a place in the goods van for an Anglian intercity train. East Coast mainline is likely to have different rules to other lines.
Re: Recumbents on trains
Anglian intercities no longer have a goods van but a short wheelbase bent will definitely fit in the new carriages' bookable bike spaces. There are three each side of the aisle with wall straps, like on the new Anglia regional trains and Thameslink, and not the 2 bike hanger cupboards used on LNER and GWR.

LNER & GWR are AT300s, which LNER brand as Azuma, GWR as IET.Jdsk wrote: ↑3 Apr 2021, 3:41pmAzuma? Anglia intercity (and Stansted and regional) now use Flirts. Thameslink use Desiro City.

Re: Recumbents on trains
Are "Anglia" and "Greater Anglia" the same. And assuming they are, does that mean the previous requirement to pre-book bikes (any type) on a specific train (to go in the guards van) no longer applies?

No.

Re: Recumbents on trains
Anglia is the franchise, GA the current operator. And you still need to book on intercity, but many guards will let extra on if there is space.
Curiously, the Stansted trains have no First or buffet and can carry 18 bikes not 6 and they are currently being used intechangably with the intercity stock, so many intercity trains have 12 unbookable bike spaces. Even once the timetable settles, there will be 2 services a day like that, moving Stansted trains for servicing at Norwich depot.

Re: Recumbents on trains
Ian was trying to understand what the different names mean. In that context the names matter.
