1 1/8" quill stem

Postby pq » 3 Oct 2018, 9:45pm

Perhaps I'm asking for the moon on a stick here, but I need a 1 1.8" quill stem to take 26.0mm road bars (ie pre-oversize). Length around the 10 - 11cm mark. Nothing too hefty please.

Cheers,

Peter

You could use a 1" quill stem with a shim like this.

At the last count:- Focus Variado, Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, 2 Dawes Kingpins, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, On One Pompino, Longstaff trike conversion on a Falcon corsa. :D

I could, and I could also use an ahead converter, but I'd rather use the right tool for the job if I can find one.

Oooh, maybe you might like my Cinelli Record stem - this type (this is not my picture though).
I'll dig it out.

Thanks, but that's a 1" stem, not the 1 1/8" I'm after.

I have a Kona Velocity one that might fit the bill. As you might have suspected though, it's an MTB stem, and perhaps you're after road? There's a slight upward angle plus gubbins on the underside so the stem can direct the brake cable for v brakes etc.

Thanks, but that'll be for 25.4mm bars and I need 26.0. The stem I want is very rare but does exist. It remains to be seen whether I'll find one though.

Well, I can understand how you might think that would be so with it being an MTB stem, but I thought to check the size and it reads 26mm exactly on my digital calipers. Of course, the clamp could have been over-opened perhaps to make up the difference between 25.4mm but to my eyes it looks perfectly circular- I can always try a set of bars. Are you reasoning that vintage MTB stems never did the 26mm size? I'm not too up on MTB kit TBH.

As far as I know, back then MTB bars were 25.4 and road bars were 26.0. There were some weird non standard road bars (Cinelli for example), but other than that the distinction holds good. What I'm after exists, because people needed them for tandems (which is what I want it for), but of course the overwhelming majority of 11/8" stems were made for mountain bikes.

I'd say yours is 25.4 despite what your measurements indicate. Extra space is needed to be able to fit the bars, then when you tighten it, the size will be correct. I've tried mixing and matching before and it didn't work well - there are in any case better solutions.

Yes, Kona Velocity quill stems are always 25.4mm.

Have you considered 25.4 road bars? They're not all that hard to find and the Nitto ones are very good.

Actually, no I hadn't thought about that. My default position on all things is to use what I have in my parts bin, which in this case is 26.0 bars, but you're right, it would be easier and cheaper to buy those bars - I had no idea they existed. Thanks.

Did you resolve your problem? I actually have a new carded 1.125 quill stem with an open face clamp to fit 26mm bars.
Bought in error some years ago, I rediscovered it when tidying the spare room the other day.
