165mm cranks/chainset 'vintagey'

Postby amediasatex » 9 Jan 2019, 4:25pm

I'm after a 165mm chainset or pair of cranks for a rebuild on an older frame, not after anything particularly posh or specific but it need to at least vaguely fit in with the rest of the aesthetics. I'm not being too fussy so BCD is open to options, but they must be square taper and at least < 1990, but older would be better.

Something like a Sugino Maxy, Mighty, Spidel, Stronglight, even Campag maybe or older Shimano 600 at a push...

Any got anything hiding in the back of the shed for sensible money?

TIA

49D stronglight - cottered- cranks were great
Cycling-of course, but it is far better on a Gillott

I've got one of these SR branded crank sets in my shed. 165 cranks with steel 42/52 rings. It is the SR version without the Raleigh branding so the flutes are plain and it has the chain guard fitted as shown. Late1970's vintage I think as the bike was equipped with the piano wired Shimano Positron derailleur, so would have not done many miles.
Pm me if you need it.

They have a couple of versions, but this is an example. I have some and they look neat, shiny and well finished. I know the price looks too cheap, but they are actually very good cranks. Buy a square taper bottom bracket to suit.

thanks chaps, I already have a few of the spa chainsets, and they're great, but after something a bit more in keeping with the age of the bike.

rjb, I might drop you a PM if nothing else pops up, is the chainguard on yours removable? I know they did some models where it wasn't...

Yes the chain guard is removable. Here's a pic of the actual item. Needs a good clean and polish. 165mm cranks and 42/52 steel rings.
