Commuter bike - small

I'm looking for a commuter (c10 miles each way) bike. I'm 5'7" tall, inside leg 29" so something small-framed. Flat bars, mudguards, puncture-resistant tyres, lights, decent condition, relatively lightweight etc would all be great!

Located in SW London (work in central London) but happy to be flexible for the right bike.

Budget ideally <£200. Not really sure what one can get for that kind of money but any thoughts, suggestions or offers very gratefully received!

I have this available .
Dawes Kara Kum touring bike .
19 inch frame.
Shimano Deore comopnents etc .
2000 model?.I bought it end of last year with a view to transfering all the parts onto a frame of my size , I have gone another route.
Previous ladly owner had hardly ridden it .
£200 . Present version is around the £600 mark . I think the early model is a lot better spec.
I am in Derby.

@bagpussctc
Apologies for the delay in replying - I've only just seen your post. Don't know much about that particular vintage of this model but will do some research - would it be suitable for a reasonably brisk commute or is it more a 'steady as she goes' type? Btw, what tyres (700c wheels?) are currently fitted? Some more details re components/specs, condition, and a few close up pics would be great if that's not too much hassle.

@GOHughes
I've replied to your PM.

I would suggest looking for a decent make used hybrid locally and factor in what extra bits you need to pay out on. E.g. my wife has an old Trek Navigator bought for £100 from a local bike shop when they were selling off their cycle hire fleet, it has been absolutely brilliant for the money, rides superbly and now I have put an ebike kit on it she loves it even more. It was a bit scruffy but had been well maintained, just needed lights and mudguards for around £40 when we got it.

Alternatively a couple of new bikes worth considering that are quite well equipped and close to your budget:
1. With a tyre driven dynamo: https://www.decathlon.co.uk/elops-520-c ... 78493.html
2. With a hub dynamo, which I think is worth the extra cost: https://www.decathlon.co.uk/hoprider-10 ... 05477.html

EDIT; Do you have access to a Cycle To Work scheme? Worth investigating to save money and spread the cost if you do.

I am still waiting to hear from bagpussctc re his bike which I think would suit very well. Am rather concerned as he appears not have been on the forum since 25 Jan and hasn't responded to any of my recent PMs.

Failing that, I'm still looking for a decent used bike if anyone can help.

A plea for help from fellow forum members.

Does anyone know how to contact @bagpussctc other than via PM? We were exchanging PMs until 25 Jan about arranging a date/venue to meet up for a test ride/possible purchase of his Dawes Kara Kum which he'd offered on this thread. However, all went silent and I see he has not been on the forum since then either. Frustratingly, I didn't get his email address or phone details so know no other way of getting in touch.

First and foremost, I really do hope all is ok with him as such a sudden silence is rather concerning. Can anyone help or advise?

Many thanks

Yes it is very unnerving but I am not sure what can be done about it, maybe a moderator can help, but maybe not as I think all you need to register is an email address, to which I suppose your PMs were being sent in any case.

Are you still looking? If so would Stoke on Trent area be too far?

Hi

Thanks for getting in touch - I'm still looking! I might be travelling up that way soon-ish. Please do let me know what you have with as much detail/pics as possible. If it's easier to email, then feel free to PM me and I'll give you my details.

Cheers

It's a Ghost TR5200 Alfine (8 speed hub gears). 45cm frame (I am about 5'4" with 30" inside leg), mudguards, dynamo. Bought in 2013 for £1050 and used for weekend day rides of 40ish miles and a couple of 4 day tours in Scotland. Not used for a couple of years and thinking of selling which is why I thought I'd look on the forum. It's been well looked after and in good condition.

Thank you for the info - sounds interesting and potentially a good fit for what I need. Could you please email me some pics. I'll PM you my email address.

Thanks
