Brompton bag

Postby pedalpower2 » 23 Jul 2020, 8:57pm

Does anyone have a scruffy worn out front bag for Bromptons? I am thinking (maybe foolishly) of making my own front luggage, for this to work I would need the bit which attaches to the front luggage block so an old worn out bag would provide this. Thanks.

You may be waiting a while for a reply, as my experience of the Dutch-made S bags is that they are very hard-wearing - mine is virtually unmarked after over a decade of regular use...

User R.hobbs in particular seems very knowledgeable on where to get spares or alternatives that work well.
Good luck!

If you mean the metal front carrier frame then you can buy them separately although they are not cheap. Some bags (like my Carradice one) don't come with a frame so I'm not sure how likely it is that you'll be able to get one for nothing.

Thanks for the comments. I did wonder how likely I would be to get a tatty bag. I'll try that suggestion

Something like this might be of use https://www.amazon.co.uk/Trigo-Aluminiu ... B085XPK4JH

Or there are various versions, mostly plastic, on ebay, i.e. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174108138450

Be warned that you'll need additional support for anything but the smallest bag if you go down this road. It's a bit fiddly but I managed to convert a waterproof messenger bag using one of these for an overland public transport/cycle trip back from Russia last year. Combined with matching waterproof rucksack for the rear carrier it was a rather winning combination (with the added satisfaction that I got them both at a bargain price, & going for waterproof luggage proved to be a Godsend as it poured for the first few weeks!)

These gadgets from Amazon or e-bay look as if they will do the job with a bit of assistance. I think I shall be getting one. thanks for the help.

Definitely better to get hold of the Brompton mount and build a frame onto that, like in this Instructable. My Ortlieb pannier is smaller, so my custom frame was different, but the same idea.

It's a pity no-one makes that Brompton adaptor as a separate part, as the alloy tubes are easy to get. Although really you'd want the handle too as you need something to join the tubes.

Thanks Drosall,
That looks promising but where do you get the frame from? Do Brompton sell them separately?

Several frames of varying shapes have been available, though most places are currently showing them out of stock. They are expensive for what they are, though, which is what I meant about wanting just the fittings to be available.

Yes ,you are right on both counts, all I really need is the bit to go on the front luggage block.

You'd really also need the top handle or other top piece, assuming you're making a frame of alloy tube, as you need something to hold it together at the top.
