700c Tandem Wheels wanted

Postby orbit » 31 Jul 2020, 1:41pm

I am building an e-tandem, mid motored, and am looking for a reasonable pair of 700c wheels. I don't think I will need a lot of gears, so 7 speed would be fine, or possibly less. I want proper tandem wheels, with probably 40 or 48 spokes, and I will be using rim brakes.
I intend to get new wheels built when I have found out what gears are needed. Price will depend on the quality of the wheels. Happy to discuss any options that may be available.
Thanks Orbit

You need to specify the OLN dimension you require for the rear wheel. If you are using a tandem frameset.
At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin, Raleigh 20, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Longstaff trike conversion on a Falcon corsa. :D

Thanks for reminding me of OLN dimension, I have measured the frame, and it measures 120mm (125mm at a stretch, without modification). Although this is an unused frame, it was made in 1982, which is why it is so narrow. Wider wheels would only fit, if there were removable spacers at each side of the wheel, which is quite unlikely.
Thanks again for the memory jolt.

AFAIK, altering the OLN on a nutted axle is just a matter of how much packing you have. (The axle length only becomes critical with quick release.) If you alter it on an existing wheel, then the dishing will need attention.

If the dropout is 120mm then I think you are limited to 5 speed or compact 6. I thought both these freewheel specs were now in rocking horse doo-dah territory, but I'm probably mistaken.

I'd start by talking to SJS Cycles:

Thinking about it a bit more (assisted by comments from people here) I think I would be prepared to "open up" the back triangle to 130-135mm to accept a wider hub, if one is available. I don't think that it would be sensible to go any wider. Thanks for the help everyone.
