SORTED.....Shimano BR MC70 Cantilever Brake

Postby disherwood » 2 Oct 2020, 9:11pm

Hi

Helping a friend with a problem on his 80’s Mercian

A brake block assembly carrier has a stripped thread so he can’t lock the block carrier in place

Any one got a front brake or parts available please.?

Many thanks

David

the same eyebolt part (861 6100) is used in BR-AT50 (a much more common brake), possibly other shimano brakes too. So getting hold of a spare bolt might not be so difficult as you imagine.

(ps there is a single BR-AT50 arm on ebay right now which looks as if it will yield the part you need (no affiliation))

hth

cheers

....

I’ve just noticed the generic draw bolts as pictured .....has anyone had experience of using these on such a setup as these on an old catilever set up as this

Cheers

I've a few bits of Shimano cantis kicking about the spares box including AT50. Hanging on to those in case I ever need the sort of spare you're after.

I'll have a play with the draw bolts from some of the others (IIRC M201, CT91) to see how they compare. Probably Monday, might manage a look tomorrow.

Unless the item pictured has been incorrectly assembled it will not work on the Shimano cantilever. The nearest washer has to be able to slide up over the widest section of the centre bolt so it can bear against the shaft of the brake block.

Thanks for your input

If the draw bolt itself is good then the washer in the generic assembly pictured wouldn't be utilised .....we would use the original washers from the MC70 brake

Thanks again

FWIW I stumbled upon an Altus canti yesterday (BR-CT90 I think) and I checked the drawbolt from that, comparing with a NOS set of BR-AT50 I have stashed for emergencies. I think it will work as a substitute for the one you need but

- it is slightly longer I think
- the plating is zinc rather than chrome
- the allen key socket in the front is 5mm not 6mm

it is otherwise very similar to the one you need.

Some generic drawbolts are rather shorter than you might like, but might work with the original spacers. FWIW I suspect that there may be more than one version of the 'correct' shimano drawbolt; some brakes have full-size nuts on the back of the drawbolts, but others (most of the ones I have seen in fact) have half-nuts on, which obviously can't be tightened to the same torque without risk of thread stripping.

Thanks brucey

Yes....the dreaded half nut challege.....heavy haded mechanics beware.!

As i have said to my friend, its worth trying a few as they’re cheap enough.....naturally keep an eye out for the real deal

ARE YOU SAYNG A DRAW BOLT FROM AT50 AND CT90 CLOSER TO THE ORIGINAL......?

thanks again

BR-AT50 drawbolt is identical (as previously noted, it used the same part number), BR-CT90 drawbolt is a workable alternative.
