inner tubes, x n, supplied with 'oles...

Postby simonineaston » 29 Oct 2020, 8:15am

Hi,
like most of us I suspect, I have a large collection of used inner tubes - in my case 20 & 16 inch. I used to assiduously patch them and re-use them over and over. I found that a properly patched repair was very reliable and worth the risk of re-use. Somwhere along the line, I got lazy and selfish and developed the wastful habit of simply reaching for a new tube each time I got a p******e. What do folks do with their unwanted inner tubes? Does anyone want them? Can rubber be re-cycled?

You can get them recycled by Cycle of Good https://www.cycleofgood.com/about/our-story/. They make things from them like wallets and belts. There's a map with drop-off points here.

I dropped this load off on Tuesday. No, I haven't had that many punctures - I was passing anyway and it saved a local collection point from having to post them.

The even better way to recycle an inner tube is to repair and and re-use, of course! Other recycling charities are available, and I have no connection with Cycle of Good (apart from an Elephant Bike....).

Schwalbe launched a recycle scheme this year, I think its a dealer scheme where they send them back to Schwalbe.

The last tube I threw away , a couple of years ago, was probably 10 years old with 11 patches on it. I only lobbed it because the valve base had pulled out. I always patch, and refit , at time of visit.

I used quite a few doing bike maintenance for cubs or scouts, teaching them to mend a puncture. But it was always quite messy and I never got invited back!

I gave lots of their stuff as presents last Christmas. RECOMMENDED.
