If moving forward in a fairly straight line, arm signals should not be much of problem on level ground, if cornering possibly best to have both hands on etc.

I'm not sure how/why people think that an RVM is less safe than a shoulder check -

A shoulder check signals to others that you've eyeballed them,and give a better perspective,first person true view of the road behind.

A shoulder check may well be the response to the RVM data - I certainly don't think it replaces it in all situations, but I agree that I oculd have been clearer...

Well, I was hoping to start another argument about the benefit of fitting electric indicators to bikes...but I guess that there are some lines that won't get crossed.

I think we need a thread on brake lights and indicators at the same time.
I mean, how's a driver supposed to know when I slow down to take a corner? And if I take a hand off the bar to indicate, that leaves me with one handed braking which is just asking for trouble.
God help me if I check the rvm whilst braking and signalling at the same time and end up hitting the cyclist in front who wasn't even wearing a helmet!

The quality and size of a mirror is also important. Having tried most on the market (apart from helmnet mounted ones ), I've settled on the glass lensed Mirrycle for its superior view (in my opinion). Plastic lenses soon scratch and dull in my experience. Mirrycle also do spares

Brake lights are a solved problem - braketec from B&M uses a sudden drop in alternator frequency to trigger a brake light.

I'm still waiting for a justification to buy one, I think it could easily be an advantage....
