Why wouldn't you wear a helmet in car or walking ?

Post by Mike Sales »

When walking, or in a car?

These activities are roughly as dangerous as cycling, depending on which country's statistics you choose, or whether you use miles or time as your denominator.
Ridiculous idea do I hear you say? Wear a walking helmet, or a driving helmet! Both have been seriously proposed, but most people would laugh at the idea.
It is a sign of the "dangerisation" of cycling that there is so much pressure on cyclists in the Anglo-Saxon countries to wear the silly things.
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

Actually considering the number of people walking head tilted down looking at their phones a helmet for pedestrians might be worthwhile

There was study of walking helmets that compared head injuries for school children wearing walking helmets and those without. Result - no significant benefit found from helmets. Even at walking speeds children still get head injuries at roughly the same rate. Helmet or not. Why? Who knows. Trivial protection in real life from helmets? Risk compensation? Bit of both?

Don't forget that whilst you can't prove helmets save the lives of children the converse that children have lost their lives because they were wearing them is proven.
