Perhaps tyre pressure guages would give a better measure.
They could take this further in the prediction of trends. Greater sales of pumps = increased likelihood of inflation. We know that deflation can be as bad for the economy as a whole, rather than only cyclists.

Presumably it's just to confirm that the perceived level of danger is very high, and removing brake pads from the list to confirm that motorists are less likely to slow down for you too.
