Hovding Air Bag cycle helmet

Post by John Holiday »

Watched an interesting demonstration of this alternative to a conventional cycle helmet today.
It is worn around the neck like a collar and senses if an impact situation develops. It expands in milli seconds to protect the head & neck, as an air bag. They were developed in Sweden & have been available for seven years apparently.
Has anyone practical experience of using one?
They are intended for use by commuting cyclists rather than roadies apparently.

That's been around a while but does anyone really want to wear small explosive devices around their neck?

I saw the initial testing and thought it was a joke, the way the impact with the car was done was ludicrous IMO.
That it still ignores that wearing such would be better served for pedestrians and motorists just demonstrates the mindset of these people.
The swedes are one of the few places that want people on bikes to wear helmets all the time, currently for under 15s, but if they were so worried of head injuries why don't they mandate it for all children whether on foot or in motorvehicle.
they can sell whatever they like but they should focus on a bigger market one where it might do some good, I'm sure they'll have lots of takers at £200-300 a go with a one time use. 8)

I can across someone last week using one. Looks like it may be warm in summer to wear.

mild thread necro but seems they've declared bankruptcy.

had always wondered about the long term market viability of these. A ostensibly very effective* helmet marketed purely at the type of cycling segment that is least likely to need a helmet (since if you do anything too enthusiastic it'll go off). Though they're blaming the swedish consumer regulator it seems unlikely that this would be terminal if the overall model was showing strong promise.

*though some concern over very high speed crashes

I was told the replacement battery cost could have been an issue.
