Background
Several reports have raised concerns regarding cycle helmets, for example in 2019 ‘Effects of bicycle helmet wearing on accident and injury rates’ details for New Zealand the accident rate per million hours cycled increased from 31.35 to 69.38. Some research into cycle helmet effects regarding wind effects and forces is available detailing both drag, and aerodynamic loading can occur. This paper suggests research that may lead to more information and potentially a better understanding of potential helmet effects on balance and riding stability. The method suggested could also be suitable for assessing bicycle designs and components and how much influence they may have on balance and riding stability.
