Just noticed this on feminism...

And two of them stood out (having just been here before that page)

because people still ask what the victim was wearing

And, requiring some translation for cyclists as opposed to women,...
because society still teaches "don't get raped" not "don't rape"
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.

I'd be a little uncomfortable with the rape analogy.

To be truly comparable motorists would need to deliberately choose to knock cyclists off who weren't wearing an helmet...

I'm not saying that it is a perfect analogy - but it's clear tht society has a way to go in many areas to avoid this approach to crime.

I agree with this and am very uncomfortable with the comparison.
I think that if this sort of logic is used against cycle helmets, then it would be very very counter productive.

It would be comparable if women were expected to wear chastity belts at all times to help prevent rape.

Then holding them partially responsible for the rape if they failed to wear one.

I don't think Bob was trying to stretch the comparison too far.
Particularly in the first example:
...because people still ask what the victim was wearing...

It doesn't need to be analysed, and no further inferences need to be made. Being knocked off a bike is not the same as being raped. A careless or aggressive driver is not the same as a rapist.

If the CTC were using it as a campaigning slogan then I might object. It was a point worth making in this forum though.
