Possibly we could set up a few satirical alternative ones for compulsory lucky rabbit's feet and other similar common sense solutions.

If it saves just one life then compulsory rabbit's feet are worth it. How would you feel if it was your child who died because they didnt want to be seen with a rabbit's foot?

Or one for pedestrian helmets.

I'll repeat that these petitions have not the slightest effect unless they attract a lot of support very quickly. They serve as a bit of a safety valve but they also alert the govt's spinners to what is currently important (and by implication, what's not important) to people who go in for signing electronic petitions.

The formal effect is that if 100,000 people sign, the subject is considered for a debate. I suspect the reality is that if 250,000 people signed within the first few days it would set the bells ringing.

(No rabbits have been injured during the production of this post.)

It doesn't say what it wants to make cycling helmets compulsory for. Shows how much thought and intellect has gone into it. Perhaps everybody will have to wear at least one (maybe more?) all the time! Much safer. Think of the children.

A quick search (http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/search?q=helmets) can't find any anti-compulsion petitions. I was amused by the misleading "Make it legal for cyclists to wear helmets!" I suspect an inverse correlation between the number of exclamation marks and signatures, but I could be wrong.

I'd only bother about an anti-compulsion petition if a pro-compulsion petition started getting serious.

The most popular cycling petition seems to be "cars to give cyclists space" (1037 signatures). One petition calls for Vehicle Excise Duty for cyclists, but at zero cost. This has attracted 2 signatures, so far.

The usual crowd think we should have licences, insurance etc. One petition adds indicators to the list. (12 signatures.)

The petition has a year to meet the required number (no idea what that is but the get Britain cycling petition had a target of 100000). The expiry date is 09/04/2014 so it has been going since the start of April and when I looked it had acquired 335 signatures. I think that petition has lost its deposit.

That's around 80 more than when I looked this morning. Must be having a last gasp...
