Don't we (or didn't we at one time) have a similar exemption for Sikhs (and presumably others who must wear religious headwear) on motorcycles? Or is that just an urban myth?

On all journeys, the rider and pillion passenger on a motorcycle, scooter or moped MUST wear a protective helmet. This does not apply to a follower of the Sikh religion while wearing a turban.

Not a myth,
One man went to prison several times because he believed it was discrimination. If you want to know more Google Fred Hill. Funnily enough the Motorcyle Action Group who still campaign for non Compulsion use a lot of the same arguements we do.

Setting aside for a moment the interpretation others have placed on the motorcycle helmet exemption for Sikhs, IIRC, part of the argument of campaigners for the exemption was that when Sikhs were fighting - as British subjects - for the British Empire, the British Govt., wasn't remotely concerned whether a turban afforded similar protection to a steel helmet.

Though they can't use the cycling as safe as walking argument as motorcycle death rates dwarf any other method of transport. Despite proper helmets.
