Just came across this lovely photo of Bradley Wiggins and son on bikes. Although Wiggo's comments frequently get misinterpreted as calling for cycle helmet compulsion (forcing him to issue clarifications) here is proof that individuals can decide for themselves that sometimes the risk of a head injury is low enough for adults and the children they are responsible for to ride without a helmet.

Anyone got any photos of Crackers not wearing a helmet when engaged in an activity that might result in a head injury?

There was this one were (IIRC) he "forgot" his helmet and immediately returned to collect it...



... and I also believe he was spotted bimbling around Center Parcs earlier this year without one.

I often wonder if such issues are debated/discussed on Dutch,German or French touring/utility cycling forums

I suspect we do because there's a pretty loud 'wear a helmet be safe lobby' that concerns cyclists who are pro freedom of choice and fear compulsion

I agree with everything he says except this:-

They are termed under the phrase ‘cyclist’ but they’re not cyclists as such, they are not membership holders of British Cycling.

Quite where he get's that from I don't have a clue,it's equivalent is to saying motorists aren't motorists if they don't belong to the AA

Yes, here he is on (AFAICT) the same highway that he was on when he was struck by a truck's wing mirror. You'll notice he's in the carriageway with his head at roughly the height of a truck's wing mirror…

And I don't belong to any athletics organisation, so I'm not a pedestrian...

Face it most people join the AA for breakdown cover, I imagine BC members are more about the sporting entries, or maybe insurance (don't know what other benefits there are to membership)

I have to be in it to operate as a coach at the local Go-Ride club, in a classic "those who can't do, teach" approach to competitive cycling. Though I guess that mainly boils down to specialised insurance.

I've been in CTC a lot longer, and will almost certainly remain in it a lot longer too.
