A sad list..... Sorted by county it seems Derbyshire alone has lost over 25.

well East Anglia has lost most of them. Castle Hedingham, Nedging Tye, Gt Yarmouth, :?: Norwich :!: . Saffron Walden, Epping, Colchester, Kings Lynn

And Lincolnshire has 15 on the closed list and with Thurlby and Woody's Top apparently to close will have none left.

There were 240 hostels in 1998, it's down to 164 now. That Wikipedia list is way out of date.

Its a fascinating list, and a trip down memory lane- but it's interesting to see how many were only open for short periods of only one or two years.

Yes - particularly during the war and just after. Maybe the YHA was involved in providing short term accommodation to meet temporary local labour demands.

I stayed there a couple of times. really sad these type of places are gone given way to semi hotel places with no real character. There was for a time a hostel that was a converted farm/pig building I think above Ipswich, Hadleigh?

lovely film Pete75 thanks for finding that & to the guys who made Sabrina into a YHA

seems like an old postcard on ebay for sale

Nor sure whether scrabble allows place names, if so I might win, I fished the names out of my memory. First went hostelling 1973, cost about 37p to stay.

High Cross Castle =Windermere (Troutbeck). It is a lovely building like a real castle with views to the Langdale Pikes.
