The tent every one has been waiting for?

Post by mercalia »

"A project in Brussels, Belgium is pioneering portable cardboard tents for homeless people to sleep in.

The cardboard tents, known as the ORIG-AMI project, can be transported by users on their backs as they seek shelter.

In Brussels, normal tents are forbidden, meaning that homeless people are often moved on by police."

ok until it rains

How about working to get the people not ending up to sleep on the streets in the first place?
It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best,
since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.
Thus you remember them as they actually are...

+1.
Its not aa bad idea. If the police will tolerate a cardboard ghetto. Why not a tent.

Unless i have missed something it is a terrible idea.

Or is it a satirical idea to shame the authorities/public?

The homeless have been using cardboard for as long as I remember.

London is returning to the state it was in in the 80s with regard to this serious issue.

I'm with gatto on this.

The post is of course in the wrong section.

Happy new year one and all.

so as usual someone has come up with a virtue signalling project nobody asked for or wanted. the shape is wrong for living in and while it will survive a downpour it won't take staying wet without a treatment.

but as it will still be classed as a tent it will still be banned.

Excellent idea.
But while doing that, why not also see if there's anything can be done to make the life they have now a little better?
You might even consider that this idea raises the issue and gets it some coverage if nothing else.

Sadly the leading causes of homelessness are financial ruin, then mental health, then drugs and alcohol. When you are without a place of abode or a stable state of mind, it is very difficult to ‘just get a job’.

It’s a vicious circle which communities need to address. These people’s need are complex and profound.

From the original link (my bold):
Those behind the project hope that their tents will allow the homeless somewhere safe to sleep.

The tents will be tolerated by police, they said.

Is this the best a western society can offer homeless people? :?

Indeed they are a complex problem, and cannot be sorted with a piece of cardboard. One should aim to work at the root of the problem.

It's a temporary patch. Those unlucky people need more than that, they are very prone to relapse :(

there's hundreds of under used buildings they can convert to indoor campsites. the -problem is many are predatory and will steal each others stuff to sell out of habit. cardboard cities develop on their own and have a code of conduct within themselves.

as many live there by choice as by accident. some do so deliberately to try and get better handouts from the council even though they are probably there because they spent the rent money of themselves.

some like the Roma live on the streets because its a cash economy they can exploit. I've seen them rent out the council house they were given and go back onto the streets to get the extra money.
