Ou est le papier?

Post by nirakaro »

Isn't it odd how many French campsites – even quite posh ones – don't see it as part of their remit to provide toilet paper? It seems like an unfortunate reinforcement of the stereotype of the French as a less-than-fastidiously-hygienic nation.

Vielleicht ist es drueben Sitte, immer gleich nach der Toilettengang zu duschen

Maybe it is custom down there, to always have a shower after using the farcilities

From my experience, I never count on TP being available anywhere, not just France. It's very common to be absent here in Holland, too. But also Spain, Belgium, Italy, Germany & Austria.

One Dutch campsite had paper dispensers outside the cubicles. You had to guess how many sheets you needed. They also used them to dry hands as there wasn't a hand dryer. It seemed funny to me to see ppl lining up to get paper then spreading out into the cubicles on either side. Mixed toilets too.

IIRC, Rabelais recommended the neck of a swan.

Rabelais used scatology aesthetically, not gratuitously, for comic condemnation.

Its always an added bonus when visiting the toilet / shower block to find loo paper but I've been surprised at how many camp sites do actually provide it in France..and that includes plenty of cheap municipals. That said loads don't so go prepared.

I've also seen the outside dispensers which take some working out. :D
