Tropical sleeping bag

Post by thelawnet »

I have a number of these, 'British army tropical sleeping bag'

https://armysurplusonline.co.uk/index.p ... er=product

They are good but quite bulky IMO. Zips have been used hundreds of times, still like new.

Weight is 990g, plus stuff sack, which is quite heavy all-in. I'm not really sure what the pack size is but it's quite bulky IME.

This is the Snugpak Jungle Bag

https://www.snugpak.com/outdoor/jungle-bag

It is comfort rated to 9C. The weight is 900g. Pack size is around 4l.

These are Decathlon's el-cheapo sleeping bags: https://www.decathlon.co.uk/arpenaz-20- ... 01650.html

£6.99 550g, 3.5l, no stuff sack, just a bit of elastic. They really do look VERY cheap, I would describe as 'no fill'. Comfort rating is 20C. Advantages obviously cost & weight.

This is the Trek 500 15° (comfort) £25 https://www.decathlon.co.uk/trek-500-15 ... 04925.html, they are small, only 3l with included stuff sack. They advertise double zips to cool you down in warmer weather. 680g. The 10° model is the same principle, another £5 only, but it's relatively massive at 7l.

The Ayacucho Lite 700 claims to be 2.5l and also 680g. It's £50 which is quite steep in comparison. https://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/p/ayacu ... colour=133

The Mountain Warehouse Traveller 50 is basically the same thing @ 650g. https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/campi ... black/They want £20 for it. They also make a wider version https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/trave ... 8461.aspx/

I think it depends where you are planning to sleep. Altitude and humidity and mosquitoes to take into consideration. I personally just use a sleeping bag liner but mosquitoes can bite through the single layer. On the 2 occasions I have slept out on this trip I have just slept in My clothes and been warm enough. Spent the night in Malacca bus station after arriving late due to my bike not arriving on the same plane as me. The second time was on the deck of the ferry to nias island from sibolga. Slung my hammock and tarp and slept out in the rain on a very choppy crossing. I carry a mozzy head net, but a built in head net is good. Or built into the hammock even better if using a hammock .
