Post by Sweep »

Have those pesky clever French folk consigned that ongoing forum argument/discussion to the history book?

For came across this:

Classic example of just because you can doesn't mean you should. Most people like carrying a lot less than 3.2kg.

Personally I tarp and tent, I own a casual hammock in silk for car camping swings when chilling at the site. I find it very easy to decide which shelter I want to carry for each trip. I don't see a need got one item that allows me to choose which to use when I get there.

Is there any other point for this other than to have the choice at you camp site? Assuming most hammock and tarp users wild camp you really won't if your shelter weighs 3.2kg.

Haven't looked at it in detail or seen one in the flesh, but quite often on tours I don't know whether I'll be spending the night in a campsite, when I'd use a tent, or freecamping, when a tarp might be fine. Must admit never been a fan of the hammock idea though.
I thought it interesting and look forward tk seeing one as I rather rate decathlon's design capabilities.

I don't personally see the weight as a deal breaker in itself, but then I am no minimalist.

Mm - a bit 1956 though isn't.

You can have a "tent" but not really a tent as no floor. Or you can have a floor but no tent.

Or you can get out of your muddly floorless tent sheltering your worldly goods in the pouring rain and reach for your handy waterproof.

Oh, hang on .....

Hi,
The silly poncho thing I posted is an old idea, originated from some Russian forces?

I'm always interested in multipurpose uses.
But normally it's just a two way thing to be practical.
It's a bit like zip on zip off arms and trousers trousers legs, the novelty is always the selling point not the practicalities I find.

A tent with a mesh interior and waterproof fly already makes multi use if you can use the fly and in a tent separately with poles.
The inner tent for summer no rain use, The fly for a tarp or groundsheet the latter might be a bit weak.

Health allowing I'm off on a bit of a treak end of month And I still need a sub 1 kg shelter.
I've now resorted to knocking something else up at home, I will use some poles from an existing tent, Low green easy to a erect, small footprint, and light weight, But some mesh protection Will be mandatory, If I can finish it off in time I'll post it here.

The tent looks more like the sort of tent you would take to Glastonbury ( and leave behind). I do think a hammock is a useful bit of kit to take with you, not so much for sleeping in ( I tried it and even in Summer was cold ) but as some where to relax in and have a doze, very flexible, you can use it as a seat or a lounger. I got one of those cheap parachute silk ones @£12 or so but replaced the circular cables wirh flat webbing that hugs the trees better ( from DD Hammocks,)

I have a single skin tarp-tent but have never used it as a tarp

I have used that method of pumping ship, but as I am male, could do it standing.
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

I don't necessarily mind carrying 3.2 Kg (particularly if I'm in a boat) but if I do I expect either a lot more space and/or a lot more strength than I'd get from that!

I recall seeing a German army surplus one in the late 1970's.
