Obviously relative to phone usage, and indeed type of phone, but my own method was to buy a spare battery, charge it fully, and take it with me as a backup.

Yes that's what I used to do too, I used to take several batteries.
Problem is modern mobile phone smart phones don't have replaceable batteries.

I always use a mixture of powerpacks and a charger which uses AA batteries. It is quite small and the batteries are widely available. Try to use that as little as possible as the batteries are not exactly environmentally friendly.
