Airbeam tent

Post by Sweep »

Came as news to me that airbeam tech had come to bike/back packing tents, but just received a promo for this.

https://www.tauntonleisure.com//camping ... cd11df99f1

Packs down to 1.5 litres it says.

I can drink more than that in no time.

Pumps up with a schrader bike pump.

Mostly air tents have value because they save time)are easier, but they come at a considerable premium. I'm wondering big the time saved with s small tent which would be quickly erected anyway would be worth it.

can't see the point of the inflatable "pole". Of all the elements that make up a modern light-weight tent, pole storage was never an issue anyway, as they strap onto the nearest convenient cycle tube. Risk of total failure must be waaaay higher for an inflatable support, than for a correctly used metal tube (most failure resulting from partially assembled tube sections...). Daft idea. Love to see how it performs in high winds, as a curved metal pole really good at not deforming (in my experience) whereas the presumed fabric that makes up the airbeam would, I'm betting, readily crease.

Can't say I can argue with the logic of all your replies.

Didn't realise it was only 600g!

But fits that 1.5 litres I suppose.

I tend to be very suspicious of superlight stuff.

And can't say I have ever had a problem with poles for compact tents.

One for well-off fell runners maybe.

Hi,
Correction, I'm sure I saw a video of the other day and it was 600 g okay so I got that wrong.
It was being advertised by The guy who cycled round the world solo break in the 150 mile has a record something like that British guy journalist speaker et cetera.

If you can't see the point, it's not for you.
Some serious adventure racers have used air beam tech tents, the weight saving, pack size (Including pole length) and ease of pitching have been perceived by them as advantages.
None of those have an advantage that would be of benefit to me, I'm sticking with my palatial 2 porch, 2 pole, 2kg tent. That doesn't make me question it's point.

I was merely asking what the point was. I did not say it was pointless.

What? Litre is a unit of volume, there's nothing crafty about it. I have 30 litre Ortlieb panniers, I could get twenty of those tents into them.
