Am I the only one to see parallels with a national cycling organisation?

What's the connection to a national cycling organisation, please?
My response was that it was a very strange decision of the government to react in this way to what private organisations decide to do. Expressing concerns would be fine but "doing whatever it takes" to stop it is inappropriate.

And now UEFA threatening to throw the clubs out of the Champions League Semi-Finals. Incendiary stuff...

Yet no time to spend on an inquiry into the handling of a pandemic that killed more that 125,000 people in the UK. Time to spend on football but not on learning lessons for something causing so many deaths!https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/oliver-dowden-government-super-league-european-super-league-b930543.html wrote:“Be in no doubt, if they can’t act, we will. And what makes you think they'll do anything more than use a few CMS civil servants to write a few briefing notes until this has played out? Seriously?!
It's soundbite to join in the public outcry! Although i suspect majority couldn't give a flying ****! If 6 clubs with a proud history especially a few that has a very proud connection with its people want to do this and affect that fan relationship and the regional game then it'll happen. Or uefa will just shove a higher proportion of income for champions league in their mouths and out won't.
Fans will definitely watch this in sufficient numbers for it to work for the clubs. Hypocrites shouting now when it's too late.

I’m not a football fan so I plead ignorance. But I don’t understand the outrage on every front page, every radio programme and causing threatened intervention by leaders in both the UK and France.
Can someone explain the problem that has elevated this matter so high?

Its about greed. Oligarcs and billionaires trying to cancel competition and line their pockets with guaranteed income.
Nothing like what happened to the CTC.

AIUI a lot of money has come into football (round ball version) over the last few years, particularly from television and associated sources. Inevitably, this tends to be concentrated on a few famous clubs, which in turn has brought in those who want to turn a quick buck. Once upon a time, being the chairman of a soccer club generally meant "investing" your own loot in the club as a vanity project. Top clubs forming their own exclusive league will concentrate the money even more. Can someone explain the problem that has elevated this matter so high?

It’s the cancelling of competition that has people so angry: implicit in the magic of football, and integral certainly to the history of football, is the fairy tale story of a club from the lower leagues reaching the top division and having a chance of winning.
Such a story was Nottingham Forest in 1977 - 80 where a poor, provincial club, were promoted from league 2, immediately won Division 1 (the top league), and then became the best club in Europe by winning the European Cup, back to back, in 78/79 and 79/80.
The clubs in the breakaway league have negated this natural progress of competition (promotion and relegation) as it is a closed shop. Membership is by invitation and the original founding members can never be relegated.
Also, there has always been an understanding that the top clubs support the whole football pyramid, grass roots football for children, and this is negated.
To add insult to injury, this self proclaimed elite are no such thing as the founding members Arsenal, Tottenham, and Man City, have never won a European Cup/Champions League which is the true mark of greatness in European and World football.
And of course, they want to concentrate all of the money amongst this so-called elite.
UEFA have threatened that their players will be banned from playing for their national teams in the World Cup.

The fans and politrickians revolted, that was over before one could sing 'We hate Tottenham Hotspur, we hate Arsenal too..'
One wonders if the perpetrators of the breakaway plan are plotting something else, perhaps in the hope of not being noticed because of the indignation filling the air

In the early 1900's the High Court blocked a breakaway CTC group* from making constitutional changes to become the "Touring Club" and to admit motorists to the organisation.Philip Benstead wrote: ↑19 Apr 2021, 11:06pmEuropean Super League: Ministers say they will work to block breakaway group
Am I the only one to see parallels with a national cycling organisation?
I'm not sure that I'd call it a parallel.
*A majority of CTC members voted for the change in 1906.

Re: European Super League: Ministers say they will work to block breakaway group
What ever made those fan think that those oligarchs and billionaires would do anything other than want as high a return on their investment as was possible (plus a bit more). It's what oligarchs and billionaires do - squeeze for every cent. Most people would have appreciated what was going to happen the moment their favourite teams were purchased by their oligarchs and billionaires. So be shocked when it happens seems just naive.

"Just relegate them", suggested the fans (Guardian), then Liverpool can play in the Corinthian League North and struggle up through the divisions as Rangers did in Scotland
