And how does experience as a cyclist help with administrative skills, organisational growth, marketing, digital strategy, etc? And does it matter if this cycling experience was as a CTC/CUK member or not?

I've just voted, only problem for me was getting it down to four, went for a mix of those I'd like to ride with and think would be likely to understand what I want from cycling, and those who look like they have excellent management experience. It really was coincidence that they also happen to have been members for the longest time, but if that's anyone's criteria there are four on the list that have been members for at least ten years.

It probably helps more with direction of the organisation, so it only helps with those things in as much as it keeps them relevant and the board vanishing into the pit of naval-gazing, empire-building and executive capture which has consumed so many clubs.

Even as a non-member, I think it probably matters that CUK's leaders have at least some experience as a CTC/CUK member, to understand the wider organisation culture which is very different from the more anarchic Cyclenation campaign groups, sponsored government sports agencies like HSBCUKBC or network charities like Sustrans. CTC has a unique heritage in this country and possibly the world and the strengths of that should be harnessed rather than discarded.

Knowledge of your target sector. If you are making decisions for the best interests of cycling it helps to know about cycling. If you are trying to attract members (predominantly from the cycling community) it will help to understand what that community is seeking. If you are seeking grants for cycling projects it helps to appreciate the arguments for the need for the project, etc.

If you are looking to develop a "digital strategy" you need to understand who you are targeting with that strategy. Teen pop-stars would use a very different strategy to and aircraft manufacturer who would use a very different strategy from a cycling organisation. Appointing e.g. Kim Kardashian's digital strategy manager might (initially) get lots of young youngsters visiting the CTC/CUK digital presence but will that really help the organisation and will it be sustained? You need people who know the sector they are making decisions about.

Yes again, though the proviso is that we don't know quite who they're trying to attract or what the target of their digital strategy is. In fact I wonder if they do? There's the obvious and explicit shift from aiming at "services for cyclists" to broader help for those who don't currently cycle, about which we'll have our own opinions, but I'm sure that's not the whole of it.

For instance, there's one endorsed candidate on the first page who has only been a member since 2015 but is "a lifelong cyclist". A vote for her, with cycling experience but presumably without the attachment to tradition, could help the organization on its transformation from "olde clubbe for tourists in plus fours" to something more relevant to the cycle commuter who as yet hasn't heard of CUK (and might never join but might benefit from its work along with everyone else) –– if that's what the voter wants.

Many cycling issues go back generations, cycle paths as an example, having trustees with a good cycling background often means they already have an appreciation of the issues. CTC always had the facility to co-opt advisors, to meet certain requirements, financial for example. Selecting trustees to meet a narrow requirement, could have benefits, however, overall they may be weak in other aspects. CTC has been looking at how best to support cycling and gain members for more than 100 years.
