Olympic track cycling - spoilers

Post by TrevA »

Some top rides by the GB track men and women. Team sprinters in the final ride off for gold. Women's team pursuiters bear the world record and qualify fastest.

GOLD in the team sprint. Top stuff!

British Cycling in disarray? I don't think so.

1/10th of a second between gold & silver. :D
Hopefully GB can equal or better London's performance.

I don't understand why they are limited to 10 medals in track cycling, swimming has loads, events had to be cut to allow the same number of women's events as men's, why not just add more? I think GB won 7/10 medals at London, it would be very hard to beat, there's no-one in the women's sprint, which leaves men's Omnium or women's team sprint to get gold AND win all the same events that were won in London, would love to see Cavendish do it. It also leaves Jason Kenny trying to win the sprint and keirin, taking his tally to 6, it would be incredible, but not impossible!

Unless we count Liam Phillips in BMX too. BMX seems really hard to win though.

Becky James is doing the women's sprint and kierin, there's no GB women's team sprint team, as they didn't qualify (which triggered the whole Varnish/Sutton controversy).

Not sure why we have so few and swimming has so many, it appears to be historic reasons and the IOC not wanting to increase the number of medals per sport, so when women were rightly given parity with men in terms of number of events, the number of events had to be reduced, hence the omnium instead of the individual pursuit and kilo/500 tt.

I thought that they cut the number of cycling events because the Brits started winning most of them, and they got fed up with the Brits suddenly being so successful.

(Not my idea - I'm sure I read this in some mag somewhere. Though of course it may have been a joke.)

If that was the reason, it didn't work because we won as much in London as Beijing, and look like doing the same again.

Great ride from Denmark, where have they come from? Have they been gradually speeding up the traffic lights in Copenhagen?

That was such an untidy race! Didn't look good, especially the gap to the third rider at the end, don't know where that time gap came from.

Wow! They did it! Kept us gripped with tension though.

Isn't it a blooming shame?

Superb - and how nice of Sir Brad to let his team have 'first go' with the BBC and then really acknowledge them as great athletes.

What's with this dropping the 4th person ?
Yes I know the clock stops on the third across the line. Make it that all 4 have to cross the line.
Wiggo got gold and didn't finish.
Still thrilling, on the edge of the seat, racing though. :P
